Having seen serial numbers of Winchester model 1906 quoted, I think mine, serial number 846499, is the latest I have ever seen. This rifle, fitted with a Lyman No.1 sight (second variation) is a fantastic rat exterminator. From all the research I have done, this rifle is within the last 1500 ever produced.

ehamilton, welcome aboard. You wouldn't have a pic of that fine firearm would you. What caliber is it? You mentioned rats so I'm guessing that it's something on the smaller end.

ehamilton-
your serial number does indeed point to very late production. Numbers over 708273 were produced irregularly from leftover parts and the numbers are discontinuous, so it is very difficult to pinpoint production dates, but Winchester acknowledges serial numbers reached 848000, and that total production was 731,852 rifles, but I have seen unserialized 1906s, and people have claimed serial numbers over 848000, so it's hard to say what those are (salesman samples, lunchpail guns, special orders, presentation guns, etc?). Congratulations on a fine rifle.

Winchester model 06 Serial Numbers

Thank you Ironhat and Scorch for you interest and information. Ironhat, I would like to post some pics but I don't have the computer skill to do this other than by email. However, the calibre is 22RF short, long or long rifle. I use subsonics and easily nail rats in a watercourse that runs through my land, range only up to 25 yards. Scorch, my purpose in posting this Thread was to prove that at least serial number 846499 exists, and I would be pleased to email you photos if you wish to see them. Thank you both again.

More on the Winchester Model 1906

Ironhat and ehamilton..........I'm new to the TFL but as I was searching sites for more info on the M1906 Winchester I ended up here! I bought a 1906 in about 85-90% condition about four years ago and for a while I couldn't find any specific info on the date of manufacture. It's serial number is 802297 and I thought if might be a gun that was manufactured after the gun was removed from the catalog, sort of a parts gun, for want of a better term. It's good to know that there are other 1906's out there like mine that don't show up on the general history of the weapon. Like everyone else, I really enjoy shooting mine. Looking forward to a long association with TFL. Thanks!

Welcome aboard Texcaledonia. It's curious that 'caledonia appears in your screen name since there's a Caledonia State Park nearby.

Hi Texcaledonia. Glad you too enjoy shooting your model 06, they're such a cute little gun to carry around, and so safe with the external hammer and half cock position that locks up the action. ps, I note that "Caledonia" is the Roman name for Scotland!

I have a pretty fair picture of mine,#664835,from the mid-20s.Mine is the basic version, they had some options when it came to furniture.Different types of slide forearm, curved butt-plates etc.
This was my Dad's first gun.He bought it mail-order in the 40s.
