Winchester Model 12

I recently picked up a 1961 vintage Winchester Model 12. I have not shot the gun yet but after dry firing you can not simply recock. You have to push the slide forward slightly and the slide release will then click into the proper position to allow a recock. I am not familliar with the Model 12 and would appreciate some advice from someone in the know as to what might be causing this.

Thank you,

Mike

Every pump shotgun that I know of, with the exception of a few older guns like the Ithaca 37 and the Winchester 97 (and early Model 12s ???), requires you to hit the slide release in order to work the action after dry firing. BTW, a 1961 Model 12 is not an old gun as Model 12s go. It was discontinued in 1963, with only limited runs hitting the market sporadically over the years after that.

Thanks for the reply, I mostly shoot handguns and rifles. The only other pump gun I have is a Remington 870. If the gun works well it will be one of those good deals you sometimes get. Picked her up for $139 at a pawn shop. The forearm has a crack but it usable, other than that it is in pretty good condition and it looks like you can pick up a used forearm pretty cheap or even brand new from Boyds. Cant wait to try it out.

Thanks
Mike

The PROBLEM you described is a built in, meant to be, attribute of the model 12. It is a safety feature and is an idication that the gun is functioning correctly.

When you shoot real ammo in a model 12, the recoil naturally pushes the slide forward to unlock the action. Since there's no recoil when you dry fire, you have to push the slide forward to unlock it.
