Winchester Model 12 combat shotgun?

Anyone ever convert a model 12 into a home defense / combat shotgun? How do you think this would perform?

Model 12

Model 12 is a great home defense shotgun, Old models with no disconnector are particularly good. I would not cut the barrel however.

12's are to nice of guns to chop up. A model 1200 or 1300 are inexpensive and have
many barrel choices readily available and many aftermarket accessories if one wants them.

20" barrel

Actually, I found an older one already cut down to 20" barrel. Decent shape but probably needs some tlc. I've never seen one like this, so it caught my eye.

junker

Yep, about 25 years ago I found a beat up mod. 12 12ga. with a poly choke. I had a smith cut the choke off and put a bead on. About all I did otherwise was take the magazine plug out.

As far as TLC, it's pretty tough to hurt a model 12. I've got two others in 12 ga. and one in 20 ga.

Since Model 12's were made in short barrel configuration for military, be sure to check for US markings including the flaming bomb on the 20 incher you found .

A cut down one would in fact still make a great HD shotgun.

Model 12s make great "Serious" shotguns. I wouldn't cut one down, but if I found one like that....

One caveat....

The fan fire feature is more for show than utility. Very hard to control with full power ammo.

At the same time, most 12s shuck like butter and a good rate of accurate fire is possible with practice.

HTH....

Sling swivel?

Did these short 20" barrel versions come with a swivel for a sling?

Where would these military marking be located? Maybe I'll go look today.

This is some info from Bruce N. Canfield's U. S. Combat Shotguns. There isn't a lot of info on WW1 Model 12's, other than there were some in the trenches and also at home, guarding military bases.
WW2 is a different story. Serial #'s are in the range from #939649 - 1035241. Receivers are marked with a large US and the flaming bomb on the right side of the receiver under the ejection port. Barrels have the flaming bomb on the top, just ahead of the receiver and length is approximately 20 3/4". It should have a barrel shroud with bayonett lug and sling attachment point. Many of the military shotguns are missing the original fore-end shroud. Another point is it may have been a police riot gun, in which case there might not be any US ordinance marks.
There may be exceptions to the above info as the records that remain may be incomplete.
I am not a military collector, just giving you some info from a book I have, to quickly identify if it is a US model. Perhaps one of the collectors among us will pipe up with more info.
