Winchester Model 100- Which magazine to use?

I just purchased a Winchester Model 100 semiauto rifle in .308 caliber.

The Model 100 rifles have a magazine that holds the bolt open after the last round is fired. However, to remove the magazine, you have to manually hold the bolt open or else it slams shut. Thus, it is a two handed enterprise.

The Model 88 lever action rifle uses the same magazine, but has a follower that, for obvious reasons, doesn't interfere with the bolt moving forward after the mag is emptied. You obviously can't use the Model 100 mags in the Model 88 since it would mess with the bolt moving forward (not good in a lever action).

My question is whether or not to buy Model 88 magazines for my Model 100 to just allow the bolt to go forward on its own after the last shot is fired so I don't have to fool with it and can just remove the magazine without any fuss? Granted, I might not know by the locked open bolt I am empty, but it would sure simplify reloading.

Also, for those of you in the know, does using the Model 88 mags hurt the Model 100 (i.e. does the bolt get damaged by running over the top of the empty Model 88 mags)? What are your experiences?

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Any issues, Keg?

Thanks for the reply.

Just wondering if you notices any issues regarding the 88 mags causing unusual wear on the bolt of the Model 100?

Wow , all these years I just never thought about it....a MODEL 88 mag is just a MODEL 100 mag with the bolt hold open feature removed/deleated. I shall be seeking a 88 mag or two at the shows.

Interesting, huh?

I'll definitely keep my one 100 mag to keep the bolt open in case I want to run a bore snake down the bore for cleaning.

Otherwise, I'll be using the 88 mags at the range and on the hunt (if that opportunity arises).
