Winchester Md. 23

I have the opportunity to purchase a Winchester Md. 23 12 Ga. with an English stock. Used like new in the factory case. I would like to add this to my collection.

I'm just curious about the gun. I have little knowledge on sporting smooth bores. It was the last of my firearms interests.

The price quoted is $600.00. I know for a fact the gentleman only used the gun for one hunt in Scotland. I booked the hunt, he bought the gun just for that.

Any replys from more knowledgable enthusiasts is greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

At $600 this gun is a VERY good buy. I have never shot a 23, but I have seen some, and they are a good looking gun with good balance.

A Winchester Model 23 XTR (Field Grade) in excellent condition with case will typically sell for over $1,000. Sounds like you've found a good deal!

Buy it...

While not the handmade jewel the Model 21 is, it's a sound, serviceable SXS with a good rep. On the heavy side for upland work, but not by much. That English grip will help that last.

Every 10,000 rounds or so, take it to a smith for an internal cleaning and checkup.

If it was a grouse gun, it's probably choked IC and Mod, great for most bird hunting.

It sounds like a keeper...
