Comes with a Simmons 3-9x40 scope.
On sale for $300.00 at Wal-Mart.
This will only be a range rifle. So is this a fair deal? I would also like your opinion on the .270 caliber, since I know nothing about it.
Thanks

Just the bare gun would be a helluva deal, moneywise. I'm happy with my Simmons 44Mag, but I'm unfamiliar with the rest of the line, and you didn't say which model is on the gun...

The .270 is a great hunting cartridge. Since it's never been a military cartridge, there's no really cheap source of ammo.

If you take up reloading, you can create some nice target-shooting loads and enjoy it. If you get into hunting, some years on down the road, you have an excellent all-'round cartridge.

If you're absolutely not interested in reloading or hunting, pass on this deal--or buy it and resell it for a profit--and wait for, say, an equivalent deal on a .308. Otherwise, the savings on the rifle will lose out to the cost of factory ammo.

FWIW, Art

this is a great deal and a great cartridge. The .270 is a flat shootin, very accurate, modest recoil cartridge. If they have this deal at my Wal-Mart I will have to pick one up. Thanks for the heads up and dont pass the deal up.

The most accurate rifle I owned before I went to Viet Nam in the late 1960s was my Winchester Model 70 .270... It was probably made in the 1940s or 1950s. Accuracy was exceptional, for me. Is the new Winchester Model 70 as good as the old ones? I have no idea. The .270 cartridge is what I used for deer season and I bagged many in my younger days. But, after Viet Nam I no longer hunted animals. Hope this helped a little.

I'm with Art. Unless you plan to reload then that's going to be a pretty expensive range rifle. If you're going to use it to occasionally put some meat in your freezer, then you're looking at one of the all-time great cartridges.

But $300 is just a phenomenal price for that package. The rifle is worth more than that, IMO.

Thanks.
As for model, it's the Black Shadow, with a synthetic stock.
And yes I will be reloading for it, so I'm not too worried about ammo.
I think I'm gonna put it on layaway this morning.
Thanks again guys.

Since you do reload, and mentioned this as a range rifle, you may want to see if Sierra still makes their MatchKing bullet in .270 . Just a few short years ago I know they had a 135-grain MatchKing for the .270, but I don't know if they still produce it. At any rate, the .270 is one of the all-time great calibers.

I put a deposit on it Monday, paid it off Friday, and took it out yesterday (Saturday). Shot great, after sighting in the scope and getting used to the recoil (give me a break, I've never shot a high powered rifle before).

Good on ya, gbrading1974. Sounds like you got quite a deal.

& ditto everything said about the .270 & Win's 70 - both great & a good combo - classics in both regards.

FWIW & since you reload, .30-06 brass can be run through your .270 sizing die & off you go with .270 brass. No neck turning should be required as when, say, taking .308 down to .243 Do keep that in mind if a fellow range shooter decides to leave his '06 behind.

.270 shines with bullets in the 130 gr weight range.

The first box of ammo I bought was Remington 130 Core Lokt PSP. Pretty accurate after fiddling with the scope ( which I plan on replacing soon and putting on my .22).
Some questions. Please bear with a rifle newby.
My model doesn't have a hinged baseplate, only an internal mag. The owners manual does not recommend breaking the rifle down any further than removing the bolt for cleaning. Is this true, or just a caution?
Is it a bad idea to remove the scope for cleaning, to avoit getting solvents or oil on it?
I suspect the butt end of the stock is hollow. It sounds hollow when knocking on it, and the entire rifle is barrel heavy. I haven't got to taking the recoil pad off the see if this is true, but if it is, can anyone recommend a way to make the butt heavier? When I shot it, the gun was jumping around on my shoulder, and I think this might be part of the problem. I don't mind recoil, but I'd like to steady the rifle.
Thanks for the patience!:D

gbrading1974,

Far as breaking it down, there's really no need to do it anyway. After removing the bolt, the next step is to remove the rifle from the wood which is very seldom necessary. That will more than likely cause some change in where your bullets hit (point of impact) relative to point of aim (POA).

Unless you're out in the rain, there's no need to do much more than pull the bolt, do your normal solvent/patch, etc. through the bore, wipe off the bolt & "reassemble." A wipe down with a tad of oil on the outside to remove fingerprints, etc. is always a good idea.

No need to remove the scope. That will more than likely cause a change of sighting, etc. & you'll end up resighting every time you take the rifle out to shoot. Spray a li'l solvent (or preservative oil) on a rag & just wipe down the outside of the rifle. Should do it.

The synthetic stock is probably more "hollow" than would be a wood one. Zip for experience for any synth Win rifles. Off the top of my head (which isn't firing on all cylinders about now) - if you do have a largish cavity, you may be able to stuff a sock in there partially filled with shotgun lead shot. Beats me.

gbrading1974,

Just out of curiousity, does your Model 70 have the push feed action or the "pre-64 claw" extractor?

Winchester 70 package in 30-06

I just bought one of these in 30-06 for $300 from Walmart.
Mine has the 3x9x40 scope with 24" barrel.
A great deal !!!! I can't wait to take it out shooting.
Get yours while they are still there.
They also had Weatherby(Howa) rigle in 300 weatherby for $388 if you want a real blaster.

I've purchased two of the 7MM in that setup and love them very much. They shoot groups that I don't deserve.
I wish WalMart would put them on sale for 300 bucks - I'd put 3 on lay-away tomorrow! (Need a couple more).

I originally wanted 30-06, but this Wal-Mart had already sold it. I called another, but had theirs for original price. I just took mine out again yesterdaywith 40 round, and I don't regret the choice!
