Winchester m70 Extreme Sporter

Well just bought a new rifle today, but since I live in the great state of Ca I have to wait ten days to bring home. It's the Win M70 extreme sporter in 300 wsm. It's basically the extreme weather without a stainless finish. I can't wait to get it home and take it out. Does anyone have any experience with this rifle I couldn't find much online.

I have the new FN made EW in 308,as well as one of the Classic Winchesters in 300 WSM.

The new FN produced Winchesters are the best ever Winchesters. I think you will love the rifle.

The 300 WSM is a very well thought out round especially if you reload. Since it is on a short action it will be about the same size and weight as a small compact 308 rifle. With factory loads or full bore handloads you are right at 300 Win mag velocities in a rifle that is smaller and lighter. Since the WSM cartridges are more efficient you will burn less powder to get equal velocities, resulting in less recoil.

If you don't reload, you need to start. The biggest problem with the WSM's is the cost of ammo. By reloading I can load 100 rounds for less than the cost of 20 rounds of factory ammo, plus get better accuracy. A set of dies cost me less than 1 box of cheap ammo. By reloading you can also back off to 308 level velocities to make a very light recoiling rifle if you want.

I'm a huge Model 70 fan. I have several, pre-post 64's and the newer FNs.
I found the above statement to be true.

I like Winchester Featherweights, As we know, you can;t shoot Featherweights for extended periods as they get hot and start walking. For some reason, My FN Featherweight in 270 doesn't seem to suffer this problems, as least not as bad as my other feather weights.

I don't know about the Extreme rifles, I'm more into conventional blued rifles in wood stocks.

I personally don't have any experience with the 300 WSM. I do understand the Army Marksmanship Unit is making long range rifles with this caliber, that tells me its not a dog, they don't play with rounds that don't work.

You didn't go wrong with your model 70, you'll be pleased.

And no, I don't sell Winchesters, I just buy them:D

Jmr, my dad is currently setting up a reloading station, so hopefully I'll be reloading shortly. Do you recommend any specific load work ups? I'm new to this round and reloading. And I should add I'm not recoil sensitive.

I'd say the 300 WSM has accuracy potential. I just found this on another site.

http://bulletin.accurateshooter.com...oots-2-815-record-at-1000-yards-with-300-wsm/

A 2.8" group at 1,000 yards with 10 shots from a 300 WSM.

MPD, I've only had my WSM for a few months. I bought it used along with a couple of boxes of ammo to see how it shot. Not good at all at first, 3" groups were the norm. After paying $54 for a box of premium ammo I spent $40 for a set of dies. I already had powder, primers and .30 bullets to work with. After free floating the barrel, giving the barrel a good cleaning and working up some handloads my last 3 groups of 5 shots came in under 3/4". A couple real close to 1/2". I'm using 64 gr of H 4350 with 180 gr Sierra Pro hunter bullets. Getting 2910fps. Accuracy is fine, I'd like a little more speed, but I'm using powders I already had. When I get time to try some more powders I think I can get close to 3000 fps with good accuracy.

You are the 2nd person I've read about owning this model rifle, yet it is not shown on Winchesters website. Does it have the same fluted barrel and Bell and Carlson stock as the Extreme Weather, just in blue instead of stainless?

Yes the barrel is fluted and has the same stock at the EW. I guess the only difference is the gun is blued and not stainless. I saw on another forum that the gun was a limited run last summer in limited cal. 270 wsm/300 wsm and 300 win mag.I was able to find mine sitting on the shelf at Sportsmans warehouse.
