Winchester Legacy in 30-30: Opinions?

Hello,

Does anyone have the newer Winchester Legacy rifle in 30-30 with the 24 inch barrel and full length magazine?

If you do....

How well does it perform?

Do the additional four inches of barrel length make a big difference in the handling characteristics of the rifle? In the ballistics?

How do you like its stock configuration compared to the traditional Winchester Model 94 configuration?

How would you rate it as doubling as a defensive rifle?

Winchester Legacy 30-30

I have shot 94's for some years. I have the Black Shadow(20") that has a synthetic stock similiar to the Legacy(I have a legacy in 357,24"). I like the stock design and it seems to direct recoil away. In regard to the extra 4" of barrel, it would be about 150 to 200 fps with a 150 grain bullet. The book"Winchester 30-30,Model 94" by Sam Fadala and published by Stackpole Books gives excellent insight into this caliber and the 94.

bought one and i am rather disappointed. don't like the cross bolt safety nor the safety on the lever. also it cannot be topped off after shooting. if the round is pushed in all the way, another round cannot be loaded; it falls behind the "loading gate". to load more than one round it is required to partially insert a round and then push it in with another round and then push that partially inserted round in with another. push it in completely and it cannot be reloaded further. why must all these guns be ruined by pc cra*:barf:

want to buy it, i have one for sale, but i don't know if i would want to do that to ya
 
The problem with the legacy sounds like a flaw in the gun, not the design. You should be able to top it off.

The cross bolt safety is meant to reduce accidents. I have used the older 94 for years until the coming of the 94 with the cross bolt safety. I am a volunteer instructor in the Hunter?Safety program and teach that pertaining to "firearms safety". Any safety that will reduce accidents is a responsible addition.
 
If you carry the "any safety.." logic to it's conclusion, why not carry your gun in a triple locked case with biometric identification at all times?

The crossbolt safety is useless. It is an unnecessary addition that can get in the way or slow down the use of the gun. Mechanical safeties actually make people complacent. Safety is between the ears. Don't point the gun at what you are not willing to destroy, finger off the trigger until ready to shoot, ect..

If we applied the "any safety.." logic to cars, we would all be wearing helmets driving our automobiles. Head injuries are the number one cause of death in car crashes. It is a fact that helmets would reduce the number of deaths. If wearing a helmet in a car saves the life of one person it is worth it, right?

Life is dangerous, act accordingly.

Yes, safety is between the ears but I am not willing to sacrifice any part of safety for the possibility of getting the shot needed in a hunt. My travels in 1968 taught me that people dying of gunshots are not a glamourous memory. By the way, I was an auto liability insurance adjuster for about 25 years but that is another area. Let's agree to stay safe.
 
I guess that means we will need to carry those dangerous guns in locked cases with biometric identification while we are stalking those mule deer...

- It sure is tempting to get caught up in the politically correct happy thought that is so common now days. If you our your hunting partner are not safe enough to handle a rifle without ridiculous gizmos, then it might be better to stay home and help with the dishes. I am offended that I have to buy a gun with that type of crap on it. AND, it is obvious that crossbolt safeties are not the end of it. The so-called smart gun technology will be shoved down our throat very soon if we don't challenge the intellectual argument for "gun-safety". There is no end to where this can go. Guns are dangerous. So are knives. That is what makes them useful.
