winchester and remingtion history ?

Keith, I believe the first year of production for the Remington Model 700 was 1962 and production of the Winchester Model 70 began back in 1936. Hope this helps!

Per Fjestad's "Blue Book", the Model 70 had Serial #s 1-19 made in 1935. 1936 production was 20-2,238, and 1937 was 2,239-11,573. Any serial numbers 700,000 and up are post-1964.

Art, I agree that's what serial number list shows in the Blue Book of Gun Values. You might also want to look at the first sentence under the heading Rifles: Bolt Action - Pre-64 Model 70 on page 1449 of the 22nd Edition of the Blue Book. I can't explain the discrepancy.

Steve, if you're referring to "The Pre-'64 Model 70 Bolt Action Rifle...was produced from 1936 through 1963.", I'd guess that Winchester began production with those 19 rifles in 1935, but no rifles were shipped to retailers until early 1936.

Alternatively, guessing, the first rifles (or, prototypes?) might have been given to VIPs, or held at Winchester for later presentation, etc. Anyway, something along that line.

Putting something together of the scope of "The Blue Book" ain't easy. If different folks did the section on Winchester guns and on the serial numbers, I can see the ease for some discrepancy. And, Winchester's answers to questions depend on phrasing of the questions, another arena for confusion.

Which gets me back to my usual, "Damfino!."
