Winchester 94AE Question

Hi All,
New to this forum, but not the FL itself. I feel really good today as I traded for a 94AE 30-30 in like new condition. I am guessing from looking at the Winchester site that this is a post 1991 rifle due to the SN being 632xxxx in length, but what really is confusing me is the "AE" added on. Can anyone enlighten me as to what it stands for?
Thanks and looking forward to sighting this in next week. I've waited a very long time to get my hands on a 94!!
Thanks,
Rich

Angle Eject. Rather than the original design that ejected the empty cases straight up, requirind a scope to be mounted on the side of the receiver, these newer models eject up, and to the side to clear a top mounted scope.

.

The M94AE was introduced in 1983; the crossbolt safety added in 1992,; the CBS dropped in favor of the tang safety in 2003 - which remained until the end of the M94's CT production in 2006.

Thanks Cheapshooter! Makes perfect sense now!

I noticed your rule, but the trade I did was with a good friend and I had doubles, so for me, a trade just plain worked out great and I think we both won (well, I got the WIN) :)

Thanks PetahW

Looks like I am somewhere in between '92 and '03 then, because I have the CBS and not the tang safety. Man, I am itching to sight this in, but it will be another week before I have enough room around me to do that.

LOL, If you look back through the threads you will see where I violated my #1 rule last fall for a very similar rile. Traded a Yugo Mauser, which was one of several Mausers in my safe, for a pre cross-bolt safety AE Ranger model of the 94 Winchester.

The angle-eject was well rec'd by the gun press at the time although some stated that the 94 would be "ruined" by a scope sight. These same writers never mention "ruining" a bolt action carbine by installing a scope. Go figure.

Millett makes sturdy and handsome mounts for your rifle.

Love mine. I use William's receiver sights on mine. Very quick handling and sight on target. You're gonna like yours.

A scope doesn't ruin the looks of a bolt action. They do ruin the looks of a lever action.

I know the officianatos poo poo the AE especially with the cross bolt safety, but I'm just proud to own one that says New Haven, Ct and Winchester Proof Steel.

I'm not fond of a Winchester 94 with a scope, but I think a Marlin 336 looks right at home with one.

I agree completely. I really didn't want the AE because I have no intention of puting a scope on It. I just could't pass up the even up trade for the Yugo Mauser even though It violated my first rule. I would have passed on the deal had It been a little later model with the crossbolt safety.
When I posted my thoughts on the possible trade, many TFL members said "get a Marlin 336". My waswer was "John Wayne never carried a Marlin 336."
Just like the whole cowboy look of the 94 design.
