Winchester 9422 or Marlin 1897 Cowboy

Anyone prefer one over the other? Thinking of trading in my 9422 for the Marlin 1897 Cowboy. The 9422 has a loose magazine rod when the magazine is empty which seems wrong and the Marlin has a nice octagonal barrel.

The beauty of the 9422 is that it is only a fraction of an inch and a few ounces different the centerfire version. If you hunt with a "real" 94, then keep practicing with the 9422.

AP, With a protective covering lightly crimp the projection on end of the mag tube. Viola no more problem.
I love my 9422 and it is superbly accurate with CCI CB caps and I can shoot those in the backyard without neighbor problems. These little rifles are well machined and it has restored my faith with current Winchester 94 quality.

TAKE THE RIFLE IN THE BIG RED BOX!

Don't like Marlin Micro-groove barrel. In my opinion they are more difficult to clean and prone to severe leading, even in a .22LR.

Seems like you can have a problem with any brand of firearm.
If you've got a problem with the magazine tube on your Winchester I would suggest sending it to an authorized Winchester repair facility.

Currently I own 5 Winchester rifles from .22LR to .44 Magnum and have had no problems with them. Make mine a Winchester!

A Marlin 1987 Cowboy vs. a USRA 9422? Easy, get the Marlin. IMO it's a way better rifle, and no one can dispute it's true 19th Century design is far more interesting and historically significant.

Here's a link to some Recent Threads on this topic. I think they show the Marlin is the most popular leveraction .22, at least on this forum. -- Kernel

I was just getting out of control having not bought anything in awhile. Put the 9422 side by side with the Marlin and Henry and kept the Winchester. Winner - Winchester.

I just bought a 9422 from a guy in Wa. over the net. I never shot a lever action before but wanted 1 in 22lr, saw this guys ad, sent an e-mail and a few short days later im the proud owner of S.# f131xxx the only thing that i didnt notice was that somewhere along the line someone had changed the rear sight to what is used on the ruger 10-22's. I havent shot one with the winchester sight so i dont know if im missing anything. The rear sight is the exact one that is on the 10-22, anyone ever see a 9422 with the kind of sight im talking about? Thanks, PAT

Good decision! The Winchester is a much classier looking 22.

My 9422 magazine rod was also a little loose and would sometimes backout while carrying the rifle while hunting. This was when there were only a few rounds left in the tube and not much spring tension left to maintain pressure against the locking tab in the tube slot. My solution was to CAREFULLY bend the the magazine rod slightly. The bowed rod now maintains tension in the tube even with the mag tube empty, never works itself loose and everything works just fine.

Avoid the GoldenBoy. I own one and my opinion is: it is very pretty to look at but not a great shooter. Also, a lot of extra weight for hunting.

You can also try a marlin 39A or 39A golden takedown I have
both a 39A made in 1950 with ballard rifling and a 1967 with micro grove both are derived from the 97.....

I had exactly the same problem with mine and had a gunsmith "fix" it. I paid him thirty dollars to take a pair of channel locks and squeeze it. I shoot it a lot and really like it. I got the Trapper model. That is why I didn't get the Marlin; I would have bought the Marlin but I couldn't find a short one.
