Winchester 94 trigger question

I just traded for an older, serial number in the 1,500,000 range, 30-30. The gun appears to be in very good shape overall. I'm not real familiar with this type of action and the trigger seems kind of unusual. It will activate the hammer, but has about an inch of freeplay until it does make contact and drop the hammer. Is this normal or is there a problem with the trigger?

hmmm

I would say you need to have it checked out. The trigger shouldn't move more than a 1/16" before dropping the hammer. I would do this to check the gun out first:

don't pull the lever closed and see if the hammer will drop on you when you pull the trigger, it shouldn't drop on you.

I would also check the mainspring and make sure it is actually working correctly as well. See if you can push the hammer back close with out touching the trigger.

From there I would take it to a smith and let him clean it and inspect it if you don't find anything.

It sounds like maybe you have a boken trigger that has the back side of it broken off and that is why it has to move to far before the hammer breaks and falls for you.
