Winchester 94 DCOA

So I just got a Winchester 94 30-30...and as a rule I usually fully clean and oil a gun when I first get it (plus this had been sitting for 9+ years so probably needs it). I am just kinda intimidated...its easy to pull a Savage 110 or a Mossberg 500 apart...but the 94 just seems really complicated and like it would be a lot harder. Am I overthinking it? Is it something a beginner should undertake? Im really mechanically inclined...but I don't have years off experience around guns.

1) First ensure that both magazine & chamber are empty.

2) Remove the vertical screw from the top/rear end of the top/rear action tang & remove the buttstock to the rear.

3) Remove the large-headed screw in the upper/forward LH receiver wall (The lever pin stop screw).

4) Partially open the lever ( about 1/2"), until the pin that connects the tip of the operating lever to the bolt is visible through the large hole from wihch you just removed the stop screw.

5) With a narrow drift pin, tap out the lever link lin through the very small hole in the RH receiver wall opposite the large hole, pull down on the rear of the lever to drop the locking lug out of the bolt raceway, and withdraw the bolt to the rear.

6) Remove the lower link forward end's pivot screw/pin to remove those parts from the receiver.

7) Remove the spring-tensioned magazine end cap's cross screw, and withdrw the cap, spring and follower to clean the magazine.

Pretty much the entire rifle & the firing mechanism is available for cleaning/oiling, w/o further disassembly.

Assemble in reverse order. . ;) . :p

My buddy Junior put together this handy tutorial. Once you've done it a couple of times, it's simple, but somehow taking the stock off doesn't seem like it should be necessary. However, it is extremely necessary.
