Winchester 94 Cracked Stock

Hello all! Long time reader, first time poster.

A few days ago I picked up a Winchester model 94. Made in 1949. The thing is in great shape... except that there is a crack through the stock.

You can see in the attached images that it goes all the way through, split where the plate screw enters the wood.

Just wondering if anyone has any tips for repairing this? I'd love the keep the rifle in original parts.

Thanks in advance for any info

Not a serious problem. Brownells sells a threaded bronze rod you can run into the wood to hold that. But, it might hold just as well with no more than good wood glue and clamping.

You might also check with gunsmiths. Many times a gun owner will want a fancy/new stock put on his gun and abandons the old stock to the gunsmith. Therefore, a gunsmith may have an old used but unbroken stock in his inventory. I have seen such stocks at gun shows.

Thanks for the replies :)

I guess I'll carefully glue and clamp. OH I hate to pry that apart to get adhesive in there but hey, worth it in the end. Long as I don't kludge it :p

I use AcraGlas for stock repairs. It makes a nearly invisible repair if done right.

Mask off the outside of the stock so you don't booger it up by dripping glue on the wood, then work the glue into the crack or use a syringe to force it in, then clamp tightly (make sure the pieces are lined up right!!). If you are concerned about it cracking again, you can drill a hole from the back of the stock across the crack and insert a screw or a hardwood dowel and glue it in place. Once the glue has cured, redrill the buttplate screw hole so you don't crack it again when reinstalling the buttplate.

Hey, thanks Scorch!

I guess most of that is common sense and maybe I'm making too big a deal of the repair.

Again, thank you for the advice I'll do my best :)
