WINCHESTER 71

I HAVE A WINCHESTER 71 MADE IN 1936 IN THE RIFLE VERSION IN ABOUT 90% CONDITION. IS THIS RIFLE A LONG TANG? VALUE? ANY ONE ELSE WITH ONE OF THESE?

I don't have an original Winchester gun but had a Browning reproduction for a while. The Winchesters of the same period as yours are listed in an old copy of Gun List (11/98) that I've got. Prices range from $900.00 to $2,300.00, with most priced in the neighborhood of $1,400.00. I'm not sure about the long tang configuration, though.

Those are last year's prices, so you should pick up a copy of Gun List and see what the 71s are selling for now. It's a pity that the .348 is such as orphaned cartridge - it hits like a freight train! Kicks like an army mule, too.

At 90 percent, a standard 71 would go for about $850 asking price. There's one in current Gun List at that price. Deluxe versions are going for close to $1,400 if exceptionally clean and bore is mint. I've always wanted one of those guns.
