Winchester 70 Classic Sporter

I wanted to get information for a Winchest 70 Classic Sporter 270 Win with serial# G47687. I was curious as to whether this gun was pre-1964 model?

Sorry, I can't find anything about a M-70 of any vintage with a G prefix to a five digit serial number. The G numbers started in 1969 at over 900,000, according to Blue Book. I have a M-70 in the 47,000 range (1942) but it doesn't have a "G".

Any Winchester with a G in the ser# is a post 64 gun. The Classic is a control feed action just like the pre 64 guns. Some people say the Classic post 64 guns are better made guns than the pre guns. The control feed guns are baised on the Mauser action. Most all post 64s are push feed guns. just like the Rem 700, Savage and others.

If you have a Mod 70 Classic with a g in the ser#. It's a post gun but a good gun. I have a mod 70 Super Grade classic in 7 mag with the BOSS system. That is the best looking gun I have.

I like to build Remington 700s but I will always love the Winchester Mod 70.
