I am looking at buying a Winchester model 70 in the .280 Rem caliber and it has the boss muzzle brake system on it. The gun is very good looking and I would guess it to be about 93-95% . It has had less than 100 rounds fired through it. I don't know the exact date of the rifle. Can anyone tell me about what this rifle is worth? Thanks for the help..

Need more information. The model 70 (The Rifleman's Rifle) went through many variations. The most valuable are pre-64 and recent FN production. You'll have to give specific info to get a ball park value. The chambering for .280 is a plus. In general any Model 70 in good condition is worth at least $350 and up.

Is it Pushfeed or CRF? Cheap factory synthetic, laminated, or walnut? Much more info needed. It could be worth $200 up to $700 depending on the exact model. The 280 chambering could work either way. Probably 90% of the shooters out there wouldn't buy it at any price. 7-8% would buy if the price were cheap enough and 2-3% would pay a premium. You'll see the same things about the BOSS system.

I'd guess it is one of the CRF Classics. I don't think they put the BOSS on any of the PF models. I had a 1990's vintage 280 FWT in a green/brown/black laminated stock at one time. No BOSS on my rifle.

If it is a CRF Classic in a walnut stock, $500-$700 depending on how bad someone wants a 280 and BOSS. Winchester never made many 280's period. I'm in the camp that would pass altogether, but if someone wants that combo it will be a unique rifle that is fully capable of hunting anything in NA.

I know it is a Walnut stock, and I think it is a controlled feed but not real sure about that. I will find out tomarrow. I know my Dad used a .280 rem caliber for hunting just about everything. Deer,Antelope,Hogs,Elk. That was his favorite cartridge for those animals.

jmr might be a little conservative on the low end values. I certainly would pay more than $200 for a 70 in .280 that was in good condition. If the rifle is controlled feed (I think a desired feature) it will have a clawlike device alongside of the bolt that will grip the cartridge as it is placed in the chamber. A nice walnut stock would be a premium in my book. I haven't used a boss system on a rifle. Probably overkill on a .280. You can check the serial number and specificity of the Model 70 on a number of websites. Features such as drop magazine XTR designation, sporter status, quality of bluing, scope mts, etc. all have a bearing on the price. This forum will certainly help you is you can fill us in on info. Overall the Model 70 has been the finest of American made production rifles.

The $200 reference would be for a PF in rough condition. I suspect it is one of the CRF Classics made from 1994-2006. If so it is one of the more desireable guns and would be on the upper end of my estimates. As a shooter they are better guns than the pre-64's and for someone who really wanted a 280 with a BOSS might even bring more. The problem is finding a buyer who wants a 280 and BOSS. Most folks do not, but those who do might pay a premium.

I own only one, a 1978 XTR in 308.Fit and finish is excellent, has given me groups of 1.5" at 100 yards with open sights and GI ammo.

Well I got to look at it today and it is a model 70 Classic Featherweight. I called Winchester and gave them the serial and they said it was a 1995 model. The wood is in excellent condition and The blueing is very good to I would say the wood is 99% and the blueing is 95% . It has a 3-9X50 Tasco World Class scope. I am sure that does not give it any value. But if anyone can tell me the value of this rifle I would appreciate it. Thanks

Loving the gun. I've always liked the USRAC featherweights with the schnabel stock. The scope has no value to me. You could sell the scope for a hundred or so on ebay. I would put a Leupold VX-3 2.5 x 8 on it. Value is such a relative thing. I would go $400-$650 for the outfit.

I forgot to ask yesterday but I noticed that on the right side of the barrel it is stamped twice one right on top of the other Classic Featherweight Boss... Does this mean anything??
