How would you compare the recoil from these two rifles ?
I have a bad shoulder but it is not affected by the 300 savage and I am wonder how much more if any the recoil would be from from a 308 ?

The 2 cartridges are so close that you'd never notice in the same rifle. It comes down to rifle weight, stock shape and how it fits you. Both rifles have been made in several different stock configurations so it is all but impossible to say. But generally speaking I find most bolt rifles to have stocks that are more comfortable to shoot.

if its the new FN Winchester the recoil pad soaks up the recoil,

Get the Winchester.

My wife broke her back and has three rods between her shoulder blade and cant take any recoil at all, yes she shoots my Model 70 Featherweight in 270 all day with out discomfort.

Everything matters,

If each rifle has a recoil pad and is it soft.

Are the rifles full size or Featherweights.

The bullet weight in each.

Start with the rifle you like the best. It's more likely to please cause in the end there is not a lot of difference. :)

A Stock's (shape & measurements) always influences felt recoil as does a rifles overall weight and its chosen (bullet weight) all need to be factored.
The model 70 I believe weighs heavier than the Savage. :(
Then again a 300 Savage does have a felt recoil regardless what's ignited in its barrel. :D
But if you're a at Home Reloader owning one or the other calibers commented you can without question build a reasonably accurate cartridge that meets your low recoil need.:)

The savage was built in the 40's and has a steel butt playe. The Winchester is an older model 70 and has a recoil pad on it.I own the Savage and am thinking about buying the Winchester. I was trying to figure out if the Winchester would have more felt recoil or not.

If the Savage doesn't bother you, the Winchester won't either. In equal weight rifles, with comparable loads the 308 is going to generate ever so slightly more recoil according to the math. But I'm betting the Winchester in 308 will actually feel more comfortable due to the better stock design and recoil pad.

Thank you for the replies. I talked with the guy selling the winchester and he is going to allow me to shoot it before I buy it.
