Winchester 670

I have this winchester 670 in 30-06. I like to use it for hunting. I know its discontinued so parts are more difficult to find but i really want to find a replacement stock. I was looking at boyds gunstocks and they show the model 670 stock w/ blind mag, and also with floor plate ( was unaware they even made a 670 with a floor plate). They only show 1 stock with the blind mag and it says short action  !! But... i have seen some few sources say that the 670 has one action size and it will fit the .243 and 30-06. Does anyone have any personal experience or knowledge on this? Its a good minute of deer rifle and i want to keep using it but i need to replace that old worn out stock.( Im pretty hard on my hunting guns.)

How bad is the stock? There is a lot that can be done to restore an original stock. The 670 was kind of a low price substitute for the model 70. Still, in my view, it's a better rifle than the cheap plastic guns they make today. If you do get a new stock, go with walnut.

The 670 is a model 70 but without the floor plate in the stock. Boyds (and I think McMillan) and other make stocks for it. It shouldn't be hard to find something you like...

Yea boyds makes a stock for the long action mod 70 in blind mag but they dont make it for a 670 long action in blind mag. But someone also told me on another forum that the mod 70s stocks will work so im probably going to go that route.

and Pathfinder, the stock is in worn condition, im getting tired of the cheap birch stock. Im gonna go with boyds walnut stock, bed the action and float the barrel and develope a good hunting load and just keep it forever. But yea I would much rather have this rifle then some Remington 770/783 , Savage Axis/Edge, Mossberg ATR, Marlin x7, or Ruger American. After i do the things i want with it, it will be my go to for hunting rifles.

Any stock built for a long action M70 will work just fine, they don't even have to be blind magazines as you can pick up M70 bottom metal and convert your M670 with no issues. Think of the M670 as Winchester's original answer to the M700 ADL rifle. Same as any other M70 but with no two piece trigger guard/floor plate.

Taylor1 I should have read all the responses before posting mine

Nothing wrong with that rifle, the rifle was made after Winchester discontinued the claw extractor. I got rid of a Winchester model 70 (made during the same time period) because it was a push feed, turned out the rifle was a gem in the rough. The 243 without a doubt the most accurate rifle I've ever owned, wish I had it back.. Your rifle is similar to mine made during the same time period and well worth restocking. With that said if you look around you may be able to find a hinged floor plate and magazine that will fit your rifle, it's worth the trouble to look on Gunbroker, the only difference is your receiver will say 670 everything else will be a model 70! It sounds like a fun project. You should take pictures, before, during, and after. Let us know how it goes. Regards, Pathfinder.

Some years back, I bought a Win 670 .30-06 in very rough shape for $150. It had been sitting in my safe for several years as a project gun. The butt was chipped the stock cracked, barrel "ringed" 6" from the muzzle & the safety was stuck. The pale original wood looked horrible. I cut off the butt & fitted a pad. Cut 2" off the forend & glued on some ebony as well a piece of ebony on the grip cap. Applied some darker stain & then Truoil'd. Ordered a used "take-off" barrel from Gunbrokers in .270 Win for $30. I glass bedded/pillar bedded the action (all 3 screws) & floated the barrel. The first few groups at 100yds were well under an inch. It definitely doesn't look like a Weatherby, but it didn't turn out too bad in addition to being a great shooter!

FWIW...

...bug :)

There was a 670 and a 670A. Both were entry level M70's. The 'A' came in a standard long actions and a magnum action. Gunparts lists finished stocks with the blind mag at $62.95. $26.95 for an unfinished stock. They list the bottom metal too.
I'd be thinking re-finish as well. Wood is wood, so you use the same products and techniques used on fine furniture. I'd be thinking tung oil too.

Well, Because 'Merica...I have some information that should help. First, Winchester 670 is blind mag only but , I have seen where some people with the Winchester 670 and 670a have converted their rifle to be like the Model 70 with hinged floor plate. As for Boyd's, they are a great choice for a new stock and they actually used my Winchester 670 as a model for their house sample (templet) so I know for sure they can help you with yours. Mine also is 30-06 Springfield (long action) the 243 Winchester is short action and uses a different stock. That said I will call them to see why they still don't have their site updated and suggest you do the same. Keep in mind they just updated their web site and still have lots of quirks to work out. Their number is: PHONE: 605-996-5011 Mon-Fri: 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. CST. Also keep in mind they can be hard to contact by phone but keep trying you really will like what they can do for you. Mine is Heritage style done in their Coyote wood with a 90 degree finish and it looks amazing. I had to do a little fitting to get the safety to work but it only took like three minutes and a small piece of 400 grit sand paper and a small flat file. Mine has the side slide safety. If yours has the side slide safety then a little fitting may be needed but if yours has safety on the bolt than you shouldn't need to do any fitting. Good luck and enjoy. :)
