Winchester 62A

I have a Winchester 62A that I purchased used in 1962- for almost nothing. Worked perfectly with the usual small scratches and dings. I loaned it to a family member for a few years and they stored it in a closet where some kind of household cleaner dripped onto it. No harm to the bluing. But the finish on the wood is completely gone everywhere a drop touched it. Gunshop guy says he will refinish for $75.00. I have seen his work and it looks great. I am arguing with myself as to whether I would be willing to use the refinished rifle. Spend the money to turn it into just a visual trophy? Not my style. But the question of the moment is whether that price is reasonable for the job.

Sounds like a good price for quality work. But on the other hand, if I was in your situation, I would probably refinish it myself... $15 or so for supplies and a whole lotta pride in doing it yourself. If it doesn't turn out like you want you can still pay the $75.

This way the wood is protected and it will be nice enough to use, but not so nice you are afraid to scratch it in the field or at the range. (at least my work wouldn't be that good)

In an unrelated note, I'm currently a senior zombie here at the TFL! :) Happy Halloween, I guess!

Do it yourself and you'll

know you did it good.

Something satifying about getting dirty and a good result at the finish.

Locate some old gunsmithing books, e.g." Howe or Baker/Traiser for stock finishing instruction.

Redatailed my Dad's 1906 with rosewood stock and forearm, by cleaning it with
Scott's liguid Gold cleaner really a nice job took some dirt off and decent figure for the rosewood. The 62 I believe has good walnut, MIGHT be very pleasing.
