does anybody have any input on the winchester338 mag as far as accurcey, reliability and all around hunting rifle?

The 338Mag is one of the best elk rounds ever made.Trade offs are a little more weight than most guns in say a 3006.Recoil is a little more than a 3006.You certainly can use it as an all around gun if you want to especially if you reload. If you wanted one rifle to hunt anything in North America, you could do a lot worse than a 338.The only real objection I would have as a all around rifle is it is a little heavy in most examples I have seen to suit me for all around use.Recoil might be a problem for the casual shooter.

Agree with Nevada. The .338 is an excellent cartridge.

My biggest problem with it, though, is that in most American models the gun weight is too low, and recoil becomes a real problem.

With the light-weight guns, you get recoil that is very similar to the .375 H&H, but without the power.

Muzzlebrakes are a very good way of combatting that, but at the cost of ear shattering noise levels.

I fired a friend's .338 Remington 700, which he had fitted with an aftermarket brake.

Recoil was significantly less than other .338s I've fired that don't have a brake, along the lines of a .30-06 firing a 165-gr. bullet, I'd say.
