Winchester 1895

I have a 95 Win. /. 30 Govt 06. Got rifle several years ago. I got 2 boxes of old
Win. Rn 180 gr. with it. Rifle was very accurate for its type. After shooting up old
ammo, I loaded up some 150 Speer spitzers at about 2500 fps. No good. I tried
several different bullets, spitzers, no good. My buddy gave me box of premium
Federals, spitzers. I couldn't hit gallon jug at 100yds. Then in my junk I came
across Remington 170 gr. coreloc bullets. They had double cannelure. Loaded up
at 2500fps they grouped! Then I tried other Rn bullets, it's what the old gun
wanted. Rn bullets at 2500fps, won't shoot pointed bullet for crap. Shot that Rem. 170 gr. best, but is obsolete.

throat

I suppose it could be a number of variables, but I suspect your '95 has a long throat. I've got a Mark X '06 that has the same trait. The heavier the RN slug, the better it shoots them.

My theory is that the tubular shaped RN slug, long and heavy, when seated to the depth the magazine allows, catches the rifling a bit earlier than a spitzer, especially a lighter spitzer.

I always wanted a '95, had a plastic toy variety as a kid and never got over it.
The ones I found that were in my price range were always .270's.....not interested in that cal in a '95.

Shallow rifling and a long throat, from the sounds of it. But at least you know what shoots well out of it, so stick with that.

"shallow"

Hey Scorch,

I understand the throat issue, what compels you to add shallow rifling? Not arguing, just want to hear your theory explained. Velocity?

Well that's the first time I heard it refereed to as . 30 Govt 06

My 30 Govt 30-40 Krag which is a Remington Lee 1899 really likes roundnose of 180 or higher. Pointed, spitzer, boattails and other act totally different.

I could only imagine this is what's happening with your 06.

Bore wear/shallow rifling are pretty much the same. Older barrels were a lot softer than new barrels, and after a steady diet of jacketed bullets they can just flat wear out and the lands lose the sharp edges that engage the bullets. Longer round nosed bullets have a long driving band that can spin a bullet even with shallow rifling.

30-40 Krag was usually marked .30 US or .30 Army, it was not adopted by all the services as a universal service cartridge. The Army had the 30-40, the Navy had 6mm Lee Navy, the USMC still used 45-70 at the time of the Spanish-American War.

The 95 win chambered in the 30-40 was designed to use round nose bullets, therefore the long throat. In the Spanish American war, the Mauser repeaters used by the Spanish also used spitzer style bullets giving them and advantage with good accuracy at longer ranges.
The 30-40 with round nose bullets weren't able to be accurate at those ranges.
