Winchester 1892 upgrades/accessories

Hi all,

I'm looking for some upgrades for my Winchester 1892 sporter (miroku) in 45 colt. I really want to maintain the nostalgic look of the gun while doing so. Here are my thoughts.

1. Adding a peep sight. I know marbles makes one that goes over the tang safety but I'm not sure if it would look right. recommendations on brand, type, or any other relevant Information will be helpful.

2. The sporter comes with a curved but plate. I'm not sure if I'm just holding it incorrectly but it never feels quite right. I was thinking of adding a slip on recoil pad and then seeing if I could make or buy a leather cover for it (maybe with an integrated cartridge cuff) to maintain the look I want.

3. I'm looking into adding a sling without drilling sling swivels into the stock. Anyone know of any decent product or way to rig it up without drilling?

Any other ideas are greatly appreciated. Please excuse spelling and grammar errors as I am using my phone for this post.

You could get a receiver sight if you didn't mind drilling and tapping.

You can buy a leather covered slip on pad. I don't see one with cartridge loops.

You can buy a lace on sling that does not require swivels.

Buffalo Arms has all of them.

.

A crescent butt needs to be placed on the ball/curve of the shoulder, or on the bicep - and not inside the shoulder towards the collar bone.

To add to Petah's comment, try shooting with your trigger hand elbow held high, but I wouldn't go so far as the bicep.

Myself, before I put an old style tang peep on,I'd find a rifle that had one and spend a little time with it.I put one on my Browning 92 .44 and took it back off.Bummer is,it cost a drilled and tapped hole in the tang.I find the tang sight cumbersome and in the way.

I agree with your approach to try to avoid drilling holes. That Miroku is too nice to Swiss cheese...

Be a little carefull about where you wrap leather around it,sometimes rust will grow underneath.

The Buffalo Arms suggestion is a good one

I have tang sights on my single shot target rifles.
They feel awkward to me on repeaters, too.

My 1892 Winchester had a receiver sight when I got it, but SASS does not allow them, so I took it off and put on Marble's open sights.
I am pretty well out of SASS now, so if the peep and its matching Dockendorff floating bead front turn up, they will go back on the gun.

OK, it has extra holes. But it is a much better shooter than with open or, for me, tang sights. You can decide whether you want a shooter or a showpiece.
