Winchester 1400 12 gauge Questions

My grandson asked if I could repair his broken 1400. I've neither shot nor disassembled a 1400 so bear with me.

I disassembled the gun, did a thorough cleaning and was able to re-assemble the gun without a manual. It didn't take long to notice the action release is missing. I will order a replacement.

It looks like a simple task of sliding the release into the slot. Is this correct?

I see there is a long style release. Is this compatible with the 1400.

One final question. The fore stock moves a little, maybe 3/8". Is this normal?

That much movement in the forestock tells me something's wrong. Maybe missing a part or assembled wrong?

the action release is missing.

Fix that.

THEN see what the forearm does.

one thing at a time is slow but it gets the job done and sometimes fixing one thing means you won't have to fix two. Not saying this is one of those times, but a part missing, so fix that, then continue to troubleshoot.
