Winchester 1300 or Remington 870??

I am interested in buying either the Winchester 1300 Walnut Field or the Remington 870 Wingmaster. Both in 3" and with a 28" barrels and in 12 guage. I want it for a do it all type of gun, mostly for hunting waterfowl. Here the 870 is about $170.00 more than the 1300. I wanted to know if that is worth spending the extra cash or if im going to get the same results from the 1300?? Which gun would be more reliable for the long haul?? Also does anyone know what the length of pull is on both guns, which would fit a bigger guy better (6'2",215lbs)?? What is the better buy here?? Thanks

Personally, I like the 870, you may not. the bottom line is that you should get what pleases you, no one elses opinion matters. Including mine. I would look around more, there shouldn't be $170 spread in prices.

If "The Long Haul" is measured in generations, the 870 wins. If in decades, it's a draw.

You've a Win/Win situation. Get the one that FEELS best...

I've always enjoyed the 1300. It was my first gun. A lot of sentimental value there. I've never enjoyed any Remingtons, they seem to kick harder and don't shoulder as nicely as the Winchesters. But I'm bias, maybe if my first gun was a Remington I would promote the 870.

spread...

Sorry, the reason for the spread in price is because I am located in Canada. It is approx $479.00 for the 1300 and approx $650.00 for the 870. So usually about $170 difference, to me that seems like alot of money if I can get the same qualities from the Winchester. I havn't shouldered either of them and this is my first shotgun. How should they feel when shouldered?? Should you be streching foward to meet the stock or should it just be seated right on your shoulder when standing at rest?? I don't know how one should fit.

just read "Some Winchesters will continue to be built overseas, but three guns -- the classic lever-action rifle of western fame, the bolt-action hunting rifle (called the Model 70) and the Model 1300 pump-action shotgun -- will no longer be manufactured." so maybe this is why its so much more expensive, because its being discontinued.

I have both and prefer the smootness of the Winchester action, but the durability goes to Remington...without pause.

Rem 870

for hunting waterfowl it really doesn't matter. rem 870 is your best bet but like I said if it is just for shooting ducks and such it doesn't matter.

if i was going to buy a new pump it would be an 870 for the simple fact that its been around FOREVER winchester still makes good shotguns but not great ones like the model 12 i dont own a remington but my buddies do and have had good luck with them. i retiered my model 12 in 2000 and bought a browning gold 3 1/2
walnut 30" and so far its been good to me but all the advise i can offer you is buy a name brand gun that you have herd of before youll be happy you did

I am a proud owner of a 1300, and have shot my buddies 870 super mag(3 1/2 chamber) I prefer my 1300. The action is much smoother and faster than the 870. 870's are junk and jam to easy, but that's another biased opinion.

I don't like 870s for the same reason I don't like 1911s. I'm just a hater.:p I want something that incorporates the best of the time-tested and proven designs like the 870 with new innovations like the 1300's speed pump. And no matter how much people try to tell you it doesn't make a big difference, for me, with a little practice, I became lightning fast with a 1300. I also don't like where the slide release is on the 870. On the 1300 you don't have to move your strong hand to pump it. Just my opinion, worth what you paid for it.

I own two 870's. One is an Express Magnum 3" chamber, Monte Carlo wood stock slug gun with scoped cantilever barrel and open sight barrel, that I use for deer hunting. The other is a camoflage Express Super Magnum 3 1/2" chamber I use for turkey hunting. I have had zero problems with either shotgun, and am happy with the purchases. However, I also have nothing bad to say about the 1300. The Remingtons were available at good prices when I was looking, so that's what I bought.

Winchester!

I don't trust Remingtons. Not as reliable, kicks hard, loud as hell, and over priced. Oh, and they're ugly.:barf: Thats pretty much every Remington that I've ever shot. Go with the Winny.:D Better get on it quick though 'cause they wont be available much longer.

I hunt with a 1300 and like it very much for all the reasons mentioned. That said, if I were shopping now, unless I found a good deal on a 1300, I would go with Remington simply because Remingtons don't seem like they are going to suddenly go out of production. And they are durable.
