Hey yall. I need some help with deciding on a shotgun. I am looking at either 20 or 12 gauge and am seeting my sights on a Winchester 1300 Defender, but am not limited to it. Just like it better it seems. Also, I want to be able to use if for HD and for maybe a little hunting on down the road. Help me with the gauge and the Defender. Thanks for all replies!

After you get past stature and build (in other words assuming you can handle both) it's realy just a matter of prefrence...
How much hunting do you plan to do with it, what kind, etc.
Alot of things come into play making that chioce but like I said, it's mostly a prefrence..

I'm 6'2 and 295. I might do some bird hunting, or clay pigeons, dunno yet. I would just like to get a nice pump gun. Btw, are you from S Georgia? It says it on your location. I'm down here by Brunswick, Ga. Bout 45-50 minutes from Okefenokee Swamp, 70 somthing miles north of J-ville, and 90 miles south of Savannah.

i have this Winchester 1300 Defender, can contain 8rd, shoots 2 3/4" and 3", magnums too. no problem. finish is good as well and you can pump it very fast.

The Winchester ain'tbad at alll, but the Remington Express line is about the same money. I believe it to be a better shotgun, and it definately has more options. At one time they sold a package with a short barrel and a long barrel. I don't know if they still do.

By the way to the other GA folks here, I'm in the Athens area.

I am a Police Officer and I carry the Defender 1300 on duty. I like the action of the Winchester very much, that said here is something to think about. The Defender 1300 come with a 18" barrel that is Improved Cylinder, at close range mine patterned with OO buck shot well, however, out past 15 yards it is a nightmare. I am sending mine out to Vang Comp for barrel work. For your size I would go with a 12 Gauge weapon. I would also recommend the Winchester, it is light, handy, fast follow up shots and I think for the price it will be hard to beat.

You cannot go wrong with a 1300 - I loved mine (better than my Rem 870). Shoulda never sold it - needed money back when - doh! Good luck.

for around $50 more deffinatley get a remington. the 870 is very smooth and quick. way smoother and quicker than the 1300.......

I've shot a bunch of them. 870, 500, 1300, etc. I ended up with a mossberg 590 when I was in your position. I had shot several 1300s, and like them. But when I went to buy one, I couldn't find a dealer in my area to save my life. Without local support I went with something else I like just as much.

Just bought a 1300 after trying mossberg 500 and rem 870. Honestly, they're all good guns but I got a much better deal on the winchester. People say there are not as many accessories for them but I have found everything I looked for. I would suggest trying all 3 and just buy what you prefer.

1300 is a great HD scattergun, but has limited applications for hunting. Barrel is too short. Might wanna look at models that have interchangable barrels. BUT, i have used it for woodcock hunting in VERY tight cover and it performed reasonably well. Make sure you pattern what ever scattergun you decide on so you know what going on at distance. good luck.

1300

I like the 1300 because it actually fires multiple shots strings quicker. The pump will actually start to slide back after firing to facillitate a quicker second shot. I had no trouble finding defense parts for the gun either.

E = 1/2 (Wr / 32) (Wb x MV + 4700 x Wp / 7000 x Wr)squared

Where E = recoil Energy in ft. lbs., Wr = Weight of gun in pounds, Wb = Weight of shot+wad in grains, MV = Muzzle Velocity of shot in feet-per-second, Wp = Weight of powder in grains.

20 gauge, 3" (1 1/4 at 1185) 6.5lb gun 31.0 ftlb.s

I would go with a Remington 870 new or used. Wingmaster, express, police, I don't care....I would still rather have the 870. I have a Winchester 1300 and had a Mossberg 590 and they are both good shotguns but they are not on the same level as the 870.

Very few times in life can you get a superior product for similar money. Buying a pump shotgun is one of those rare times. You will enjoy the 870 and so will your grandkids' grandchildren.

I have to disagree with AUG. The 870 and the Mossberg are used by the military, and police departments. I think a shotgun is more like fitting clothes, you are the person who has to use it. I like the mossberg because I can look down the barrel and tell if it is on safe. I can also work the action on a mossy faster than an 870. These are preferances that are up to an individual to make. I also like the fact that a Mossberg has dual shell extrators, while the 870's I have seen have just one on the right side.

My father-in-law, wife, and neighbor both like their 870's, and can work them very fast. Our Wingmaster 870 .410 is being used by my brother-in-laws kids, that does not mean that a gun for HD should have as a criteria of being passed on to future generations, when you are fumbling for a safety, and don't get to have future generations. Get the gun that works for you.
