Winchester 1200 question

Hey all, just ran across this forum and have to say lots and lots of great info, I can see already that I will be spending a lot of time on here.

Now the question that brought me here.

I picked up a Winchester 1200 shotgun in absolutley perfect condition, came with a 28" Winchoke barrel which is labeled 2 3/4", I found out that the barrels from a 120 are interchangable so I picked up a 24" smooth bore deer slug barrel from a Winchester 120 that is marked 2 3/4" and 3", I know the chamber is part of the barrel itself, but the question is, can I actually shoot 3" shells when the slug barrel is on it? Or am I limited to 2 3/4" which is what was stamped on the barrel that came with the shotgun originally? Is there a difference besides the chamber in the barrel?

Any and all advice is greatly appreciated.
 
While I'm not personally experienced with your particular gun, there is more involved than just the chamber size.
The length of the action, and the strength of the gun can vary for guns designed for the different length shells.
Until it's known what your model is safe for, it would be best to stay with the shorter cartridges.
Hopefully, someone who has knowledge of the 1200 will be along soon.
 
I was thinking there had to be a difference in the receiver as well but wasn't sure, all great points and hopefully someone with experience with this shotgun will have some insight.
 
When Win began to chamber all 1200s in 3in., they changed the model number to 1300. My suggestion is use only 23/4in shells in the 1200 receiver. Rem gives this same advice about 870s with receivers for 2/34in shells when a 3in barrel is installed. The reason would be reliable feeding.
 
Great point, wonder if they ever made the 1200 with 3" chambered barrel before coming out with the 120 and 1300.....

The win 1200 is the same as the Ted Williams 200 and the breech bolt has an issue with it . The plate screw keeps breaking due to loosening up and thus using a 3 in round might .might not be a good idea. If this happens tap in a bigger grade 8 screw and that will fix the problem.
 
Here it is before and after, still need to add a tac light, it will be primarily my HD gun with my P95 as backup

I believe the problem with 3" shells in a 2-3/4" receiver is that the ejection port is too small to eject the longer empty hull once fired (even if it will feed live 3" shells through the action.
