Win model 94AE 30-30, early 70's value

The 70's rifles had poor finish. I have one that the bluing on the receiver looks more like brownish.
Still a great rifle but if I were to buy it these days I would probably haggle it down farther saying that it's uglyier than the other.

But then again I didn't buy it. My grandfather bought it off a guy that needed money and gave it to me for my first deer rifle 20 years ago. Only thing I really hate is the guy engraved his name on it in two places. I'm sure the engraving added for haggling power.

I ended up getting it for $300

Whats it really worth?

This is my first Winchester lever gun, I have had 2 dozen or so Marlins. Its not smooth like a Marlin but its a lot lighter

I'd say $450-600, depending upon your local market.

In my local market, I saw one sell today for $550, and it was beat to [insert favorite expletive].
It looked like it had spent 99% of its life in a horse scabbard, was never cleaned, had several stock repairs, and may have been rolled over a few times.
Condition-wise, I'd rate that local example at maybe 15%.

I would say his gun is 95%. I got 6 boxes of 170gr core lokt with it. I'm thinking some new sights. Any suggestions?

Here is the serial number, can someone tell me a year of manufacture? The original owner I bought it from said he thought it was the 70's but I think its newer than that

I don't know of any reliable on-line sources to look up SN's on Winchesters made after 1963. If it is AE and drilled for scope mounts it is much newer than 1970's.

United States Repeating Arms Company (USRAC) bought the Winchester name in the late 70's and started making rifles on or about 1980. Look on the butt-plate or else where on the rifle and look for USRAC logo.

Quality, and value of the 94's has been all over the place since WW-2. Some of the late 60's and 1970's guns were pretty bad. USRAC made an effort to improve quality and generally 1980's and 1990's guns are pretty good.

Value seems all over the place too. I wouldn't pay $400 for a 1970's gun, but maybe $300. If it is a newer USRAC rifle you did good.

My resources say: 1987 your rifle was built.
Sorry about the delay as I seldom re-vist a previously commented site of mine. But I was perusing for something to do tonight and I noticed your question went unanswered. And I thought it would be nice for you to know when your rifle was built. __ Nice clean one you got there. Congrats._:cool:

Thank You Sure Shot! Its a nice one owner gun. Not many rounds through it either. He said he thought less than a box

I got a very good condition 1978 angle eject Win 94 30-30 in 2003 for $180.
That would be $257 today at 3% compounded annually.
But Winchesters and Colts have been beating the 3% average for other guns.

Thank you! Its a work in progress too.

So far;

A full tear down and cleaning
XS ghost rings and dove tail blank are ordered
Wolff hammer spring kit ordered
Once it is sighted in and springs tested the lever will go to Mule Man for a "Hunter big loop" mod and leather wrap.

Then I will have a nice lever gun plinker in my collection.

Some might say "why a 30-30?", well its cheap ammo! And to beat all I got 115 rounds with the rifle to start with.

I know that a nice .44mag or .357 would be "cooler" to plink with but if you don't reload, those are expensive rounds to shoot. I can get a box of 30-30 for less than $20 and this time of the year it goes on sale since the shelves are full and its not hunting season.

looking forward to some range time with this old/new rifle
