Win model 70 westerner, front sight removal

I have a winchester model 70 westerner. I need to totally remove the front sight and rail from the barrel. I removed the front post dove tail and there is no screw below it. How do I remove the rail from the barrel???
 
Welcome bomygosh...

I'm, by no stretch of the imagination, an expert on this, but... It was either soldered on, or oven-brazed on. The former is a relatively low (600-650 degrees) heat process, the later... a good amount more (minimum of 840 degrees) heat.

Perhaps someone will come along and corroborate, elaborate... or prove me completely wrong. :p

If the barrel is long enough, and the muzzle is worn out enough, you can always cut it back and re-crown it... hell, might be more accurate.

I have only run about 100 rounds through this gun & I have it driving tacks. Took a 160bc at 425yds on a power line last year & several running pigs at various distances. I drag it through the mud, its beat up and dinged and I love it to death. The only problem has been the front ramp in certain lighting situations causes a flash back through the scope because of the mounting height I prefer. The flash cost me a monster last year right before he hoped a fence.

Sooo...fineness hack saw, slight fineness filing with oil, light sanding/wooling. Everything stayed nice and cool. Just finished and am bluing as we speak. Not gonna be a show peace. But looks pretty good. Looked through the scope at every possible angle under strong lighting and its all good. Can't wait to shoot!!!
 
As long as it's a shooter and not a looker... yer' good to go. Could you tell if it was soldered, welded or brazed?

I am assuming soldiered because before I made my first post I was able to snap off the rising section of the ramp with a couple of light taps on the back of a hardened steel wedge. Looked at the underside of the piece and top of barrel and there was not solid metal flow, by any means, and slight pin head dots of rust(not solid contact). When I got to the section under the dovetail there was very solid contact. Chose the hack saw with lots of oil over grinding because I did not want to get anything hot. Took the last 1/16" off with a file. When I got through the sight metal it looked like silver soldier and filed away very easy. Then sanded and wooled to barrel metal. I'm no metallurgist but that's what it looked like.
 
Question 2...What can I do to make the barrel not so reflective. To give it a flat black finish. Is there an option to bluing???
 
Paint... or get it parkerized or matte blued. Or... you can wrap black (or camo) cloth tape around it. :p

Seriously, you can get a DuraCoat kit if you want real firearms "paint".

You think Brownells would have that duracoat kit?? Worried tape would hold moisture to the barrel. Have you done the kit before? Had some neck surgery and have some down time. That sounds like a perfect project to keep me from goin insane here.
 
You gotta love Brownells. Just got through watching the shake & spray video for duracoat. Looks fairly easy and is just what I want. No since in letting furry critters see any reflections & it looks like it will protect remarkably. I'm pretty tough on my guns in the field.
