Hey guys, I've got a chance to buy a 1951 production model 12 3 in. mag. Its the heavy duck version. The guy said its about 70% on the bluing and the wood finish isnt great but its not cracked.

Pretty much its a well used gun but not abused. What would you expect to pay for a gun like that?

Winchester Model 12 was probably the finest handling pump gun ever made. That being said, it's days as a duck gone are best behind it. Back when it was made, ducks were shot with lead shot. Today, all waterfowl must be shot with non-toxic shot. Unless you want to spring big bucks for the bismoth stuff, steel is what you would be shooting. That presents a problem with those old barrels. They just weren't made to shoot steel. If it has an improved cylinder choke, you might get by with it. But why risk ruining such a fine old gun.

The sympom of a barrel ruined by steel shot is normally a bulge you can feel just before the choke.
 
Value will depend on how its choked ...but at 70% ....its at best a shooter vs a collector gun....

If its a Full choke ...value is probably $ 100 - 150 ...

If its a Modified or Improved Cyclinder...value might go up to $ 200 ....

Unless its a Modified or Improved Cyclinder choke - I'd say you should pass on it. The model 12's are kind of a "hate it" or "love it" kind of gun these days ...and there are lots, and lots, of them for sale all over the country.
 
Also remember that your 70% and his 70% will differ a lot. And wood finish runs under the same opinon, worn is one thing but dents and scratches are another.
 
i will buy all the 3 inch win model 12 duck guns you can find in the condition described for 300.00.,thats cheaper than a rem expess 870 in 12ga 3 inch at walmart. eastbank.
 
I'd expect to see a tag for $300-350 around here in a shop. Unused 12s bring big bucks, but shooters like this are much more common and the price reflects that.
 
We're all trying to be helpful ...but you can see the swing on pricing accross the country from responses...

A couple of pictures of the gun - might help us narrow it down a little ...?
 
I thought the Heavy Ducks were all full choke.

Can you really buy a working shotgun in parts of this country for under $500? :)
 
Last year's Blue Book is no help on the choke. Maybe it's just the ones I've seen. I like the slightly shorter stocks on them.

70% is $550, plus 60% for a solid rib and 50% for 32" bbls.

A ventilated rib runs the price up to $1500 in that condition.
