Win. Mod. 1906 disassembly

Well I didn't think this would be that hard (and it probably isn't) buttttt!
I need to replace the extractor on my 1906 slide .22. To do that, I need to remove the bolt. I see how the bolt is held in (by the action rod) and how to disconnect the rod, but I'm not sure how to get the bolt out after that. I'm loath to start pushing and pulling. Can anyone give me some guidance or can you tell me where I might get some disassembly instructions? So far my searches for books have turned up nothing.

It has been a while, but IIRC, once the gun is taken down and the bolt is disconnected from the action bar, it almost falls out of the back of the receiver. I don't recall anything else holding it in.

Follow up

Thanks for the reply. I wish it was that easy, however maybe you can lend some more light.
The action slide won't move forward enough to fully disengage from the bolt. Removing the wooden action slide handle will allow the slide to move forward but the wooden handle can't be removed without removing the pinned on magazine support in front of it. See the problem? If I knew that was the right way - no problem - however, I'm loath to start drifting out pins, removing mags etc. just to see. I've had too many foul-ups "experimenting" like that. I hoped you might shed some light on the "remove the wooden handle" situation. Thanks

I re-read your first post. Are you trying to do this without disassembling the rifle?

I think I best start from scratch. As I said, please bear with me, as it has been a while, but I know you don't need to remove the slide handle or anything else.

First, loosen the takedown screw, the big knurled screw on the side of the receiver, and pull it out as far as it will go, then pull the stock and trigger guard back and off the receiver.

Pull the action slide back as far as it will go (the bolt is now to the rear). Now turn the receiver upside down. Using a screwdriver or some other tool, pry the bolt forward (1/2 inch or so) and upward until the cam on the bolt comes free of the cam cut in the side of the action bar. Holding the bolt in that upward position, pull the action bar forward clear of the bolt and let the bolt drop back down. The bolt should now be free to come back and out of the action.

It actually takes less time than writing these instructions.

1906 take-down..

remove side-plate screw and plate.
take spring-type clothes pins apart and use on half to gently spring the action arm away from action.
Press the firing pin head into bolt and hold and push up on bolt bottom.
whilr it apart detail everything and put some BLO on the wood.

Got it Done!

Ok, a little perserverance paid off. I got everything apart and back successfully although now I see that there is apparently another way.
I removed the pin holding the magazine and let the mag slide forward. This let me move the action rod far enough forward that it would come out of the bolt cutout. At that point - move the bolt up and back and it slid right out. I guess there's more ways than one to skin a Win.
Thanks for the advice.

Hi, mcg6637,

I want to apologize to you. I did say that it had been a long time, so I hope I will be forgiven. I received an e-mail giving me (polite) heck for providing good instructions for disassembling the Winchester Model 61, also a slide action, but a different and newer rifle.

He pointed out the following site which is for the 1890, but the late 1890 is almost the same as the 1906, so it may be of help or at least confirmation that you did it the right way.

Ignore the bit about the tang pins, as the instructions are for the early model before the takedown screw, but the bolt removal instructions should be correct.

Again, my apology, and good luck.

Jim
