Wilson CQB

I've been looking at the CQB in the Wilson Catalogue.I'm interested but how the hell can you test one before you buy it?I realize that this isn't going to happen so I'm asking my fellow enthusiasts who own or have shot one, what they think of this pistol.

I heard Terry from http://www.pt-partners.com knows quite a lot about them. As a matter of fact, I just bought one from him!

Sorry, no review as of yet but I'm pretty confident in Wilson and will post the specs, range report, etc. etc. in the near future.

Talk to Terry he's a great guy, very good to deal with...

I am very satisfied with my Wilson protector, which is pretty much the CQB with a different finish and full length guide rod i think.

When i first got it, it did have a few failures to feed. I sent it back to wilson, they checked it out, replaced the recoil spring, and sent it back within about 3 days. From that point on it has been 100% reliable with all ammo types. I think I am at about the 1500 round mark with no failures to feed.

It will shoot 1.5 inch groups at 25 yards. It feels great. The slide to frame fit is perfect, when you rack the slide it is so smooth it almost feels like it is on ball bearings.

You will not be unhappy with a CQB.

I own one full-sized (w/ ~8000 rounds) and one compact CQB (w/~1000 rounds). They are both fine shooters. They both have a definite bias for Wilson magazines.

I ordered both guns from Wilson Combat and had certain changes made to my liking. I replaced most of the MIM parts with machined or Wilson's Bullet Proof parts. This bumped up the cost about $50. I also had the guns done in all black because OD green is not what I consider attractive. The full-size gun came with one plastic guide rod plug in the gun and an extra one in the gun rag. Come to find out, these are disposable parts. Wilson does not tell you this in any of the information that comes with the gun. You can go to the Wilson Combat website forum and read more about it in the General Discussion section. I replaced mine with a full length guide rod, not because I think FLGRs are better performance items, but because it makes a slight difference on dampening recoil (to me).

I have a bunch of CMC mags and Wilson mags. I used most of the Wilson for carrying, older Wilson mags and CMC for practice. When I do have problems, it is almost always with the non-Wilson mags, last round not fully going into battery. This is very rare with the Wilson mags.

Wilson has a long list of suggested ammo for the best performance. Except for Hydrashoks, I don't use what they suggest. My gun has performed well with everything I have put through it.

Wilson boasts that their Armor-Tuff (AKA Armor-Scuff) finish is durable and abrasion resistant. Those words should not be used with that product. I would suggest you opt to either get a blued gun or have it hard chromed.

I would also suggest that you order yours with the trigger not coated with Armor-Tuff because it comes off the trigger and looks a little crappy. If the trigger is not coated, it will be a different color than the gun, but it won't show where the finish has worn off either.

I would have no qualms about buying another Wilson gun in the future, but I would make most of the changes noted above when I ordered the gun. Some things I knew about, such as changing some of the MIM parts, and others I didn't know until AFTER I got the gun, such as about the plastic guide rods and Armor-Tuff issues.

Sorry to say, but...

I'm not too pleased with my Wilson Protector. It's a good gun, but the Armor Scuff finish coupled with Wilson's dubious "guaranteed reliability" clause (It's guaranteed to work with S&B and Hydrashok, but not with Federal 185 gr hollowpoints, for example) make me put it at the bottom of the list when talking about the semi-custom guns. My Les Baer is a much better pistol, IMHO. A lot more attention to detail.

I don't know if you can shoot it, but you CAN buy it and inspect it at your leisure for 30 days at least. From the Wilson catalog..."Any item purchased direct from Wilson Combat that is returned in original packaging, accompanied by a copt of the the original invoice...will be exchanged, a credit memo issued or purchase price refunded, your choice."

My Wilson Classic however is one of my favorite guns and the thought of returning it never crossed my mind.

BTW Westtexas if you want to sell that Protector of better yet trade it for a 100% reliable Gunsite GSP, please email me.

Well, I don't have a CQB, but I do have a Millenium Protector, which is their entry level model. From the Wilson catalog, IIRC, the MP is the same as the CQB except for grips, checkering, and finish.

I own both Glocks and HK's, and this was my first 1911. Right out of the box I shot the MP better than any of my other pistols. It's tight and thus far has been 100% reliable (500 rds.). I think it's a better value than some of the high end production guns...the extra features are worth far more than the higher price.

I had the opportunity to test drive a CQB about three weeks ago and was very impressed with it. It was a very accurate gun, and the trigger was excellent. I personally liked the OD green / black finish treatment.

The gun was Ken Hackathorn's, and the occasion was an advanced pistol course he was teaching. I talked with him about this pistol for only a few minutes, but he seemed to like it. And so did I.

MPower,

I think I'll hang on to the Protector. It's a good shooter with hydrashok and S&B, and has good accuracy. Besides, if I sold it I wouldn't have anything to gripe about :D Just expected more for the money :(

I bought my CQB from Terry at P-T Partners. Excellent service. Truthful. Dedicated gun guy near Dallas. I would buy from him again in a minute.

LOVE my CQB. 1500 rounds down, 5 failures to feed and 1 split case. NONE the fault of the gun. ALL the fault of the ammo. 230 gr. hardball reloads purchased commercially. Absolutely the most accurate handgun I own bar none. Pricey, but sheesh! It's a custom piece! It replaced my S&W 645 as my home protection gun. Tritium night eyes are excellent in no or low light. I just need to feed it the ammo this finely toleranced piece deserves.
