I first met Bill before there was a Wilson Combat. I was in the first Wilson Combat building when the only thing in it was a Star reloader.
Bill pretty much perfected the custom 1911. If a person needs a 1911 that will run 100% with carry ammo, it doesn't get any better than a Wilson Combat.
Now I will also say that his prices are a bit on the high side.
I think the main thing driving a Wilson Combat purchase, is the desire to have the best. I traded mine off several years ago. Probably a mistake.
I now have a Colt XSE SS 5" with several Wilson Combat parts on it, and some custom work. It is a very nice 1911.
My brother has a Wilson Combat that is probably closest to his current Classic Supergrade Model.
You can pull the slide back on each gun, and immediately feel the difference. Then try the trigger on both. The Wilson Combat is the Swiss Watch of 1911's.
If I were doing it over would I build up another 1911, or buy a Wilson Combat new?
For my bucks I would probably build up another Colt, or a Springfield Range Officer. My brothers Gun is definently nicer, but I do not think it is $2,700 nicer. My brother bought his used several years ago for $1,800. That is about what I have in my Colt at this time. He did get more bang for his $$$ than I did. But today one comparable to his would be over $4,500 new, from what I see on the Wilson Combat web site.
