Will soaking a bore over night in Hoppe's benchrest do damage?

I have a 30-06 barrel that has very heavy copper fouling in it. I tried using regular Hoppe's #9, but it didn't do the job. Will pushing a few patches soaked in Hoppe's benchrest through the barrel and allowing it to soak over night hurt the bore? I have heard that some bore cleaners can cause damage if it stays in your bore to long.

Also will using bronze brushes with Hoppe's benchrest do any damage to my rifle? I read that it destroys bronze brushes but I don't care as long as it doesn't hurt my gun.

Thanks ahead of time,

At one time I let the rifle sit overnight with Hoppe's copper solvent in it (which I think is pretty close to #9; maybe more ammonia?). It got to be a pain in the neck. Using Sweet's seemed to work much faster, although you have to neutralize it with oil when you're done or it can etch the metal.

In response to your question, though, I don't think it can do any harm. Just my .02.

Not a problem

On the bore brushes, just give them a cleaning with a blast of Berryman's B12 carb cleaner after going through the bore. No sense in swabbing a dirty brush through a bore plus they last longer.

The reason #9 is hard on nickle plating is some plating jobs (electrolytic) have a flash plate of copper underneath. Hoppe's does a number on that since the electrolytic nickle is porous.

On chrome moly steel, stainless or chrome plated bores, its harmless. You did right by leaving the bore open and not filling it full of #9.

BTW, have you tried JB bore compound on a bore snake? It cleans copper faster than beer at a teamster's convention. Swab with Kroil, then snake it 6-12 times with a good application of JB (either Bore Brite or the regular stuff). Then clean with a solvent blast and patches.

Keith, will using Birchwoodcasey Gun scrubber on the brushes after use prevent any damage being done to them? Can using bronze brushes with an aggressive solvent harm my bore?

Thanks

Gunz387,

Birchwood Casey Gun Scrubber is essentially the same as a carb cleaner. It's just more expensive. I use electrical contact cleaner and it does the same job that Gun Scrubber does at half the price.

IMHO, Hoppes, and Hoppes BR are just not that great on copper... And Sweets can be labor intensive when you have multiple layers...

Gitcherself some Butch's Bore Shine, and let it soak. A little kroil added to the mix probably wouldn't hurt...
