Will magnaports erode with use ?

Thinking of sending a 640 to Magnaport and have the ports cut into the barrel. I'm wondering if over time there would be erosion from the gases, fire and what have you, running through the ports ? Anyone know if this would be an issue ?

I had my Model 19 magnaported back in 1990. Have had no issues with it, other than the exhaust gases staining the area near my front sight beyond my ability to clean

I had a .44 AutoMag that was MagnaPorted. I shot that gun a lot with hot loads. No erosion.

Potential problem with MagnaPorting a snubby: If you ever have to fire that gun from the "retention" position with full loads, be advised that it will spit like mad. The blast that will hit your face won't be anything to joke about.

The only two problem I've ever had with my Magnaported guns are extra noise, plus grime and occasional lead being deposited on ribs above the cuts. The grime comes off with ordinary solvents and scrubbing, and the lead with gentle nudging with a thumb nail. The noise is noticeably greater than in unported barrels; in the event I ever find myself in a life or death situation, however, more noise will be a trivial price to pay for faster, more accurate following shots.

+1 on Slopemeno's comment. I have shot a lot of ported guns and I will admit that the ports do indeed work as advertised but they can get to be a chore keeping them cleaned out. I shoot mostly cast bullet reloads and lead will really build up in the ports over time. I personally don't think porting is worth the expense or the hassle. They do provide a nice light show after dark.

Ported-extended barrels: Nash Bridges phase....

For many years, I read magazine articles about the +/- factors of handguns with recoil ports. Most of it was + but there were some things to consider.
In the late 1990s, I went through a slight "Nash Bridges" phase where I put a Laser-Aim ported/extended stainless barrel on my custom 96D pistol.
The big Beretta had a slick look and reduced recoil but the increased muzzle flash would put a lot of grit/carbon on the tritium night sight. :(
If you plan to use night sights on a carry sidearm or concealed revolver, ports may decrease the sight picture or aim.

Many thanks for the info gentlemen. I will have to think about all of this. Y'all may have saved me $95 + shipping. :)

Lead-free cloth does a good job of removing that, as well as removing "black-face" from cylinders.

Personally, I've always thought it pretty useless to port a revolver, just short of putting a silencer on one.

I had my 4" Model 29 ported, and never noticed any benefit from doing so. I never felt it did anything to keep the muzzle down. The fiery "V" in low light was was a little annoying too.

As far as erosion, the ports always looked clean and sharp and I never noticed any problem there.

I always felt that "magnaport" or any other "porting" was an answer to a question that had not been asked.

That said, re the difficulty of keeping the ports clean, wouldn't the exclusive use of plated (at lower velocities) and jacketed bullets pretty much take care of that?
