Wiley Clapp Ruger GP 100

Micro man

I was at my favorite gun shop today unfortunately only looking not buying and ran across a very sweet looking gun. The man behind the counter said it was a Wiley Clapp model Ruger Gp100.It had grips with I think wood inserts, fluorescent front sight, drift adjustable rear sight, beveled chambers and it was a grayish finish that looked great on the gun. It has a 4 inch barrel and chambered for 357. It was also very pricy. I tried looking on line for information about the gun and what kind of finish it had but without success. I thought maybe the members here may have run across one and could fill me in.

Google "Wiley Clapp GP100" there's tons of info on this revolver out there...

I just purchasedone this weekend, cylinder is binding up when loaded, headed back out to the range now with it with a fresh cleaning and different ammo to see how it goes...

I have a blued one and I love it. The only problem I've had with this gun is finding a lefty holster for it. Do they really come in 4" now? Mine and every other one I've ever seen is 3"..

I was interested for a bit and had the chance to handle one at a Cabela's.
My $0.02,
It felt more in the charter arms region of fit and finish than in the S&W region that I'm used to. For the money they were asking I lost interest almost immediately.
Maybe I was put off by the bead blast finish, but the gun felt way too loose for my tastes. Much looser than any other gp100 I've handled.
I did like the sights quiet a bit though.

That's funny, think mine is too tight, it's still binding up on two cylinders, gonna have to contact ruger....

Years ago I had several ruger revolvers and never had problems with any of them, but this one I'm happy with except for the issue on a brand new piece...

Yea, everything I read prior and since led me to believe my experience was an anomaly.
My sp101 feels much better, so it was probably that particular gun.
At the time I was looking at a used gp100 for around $400, and I'm a cheapskate so my mindset was that I'd rather have a 4" gp100 with a set of nice sights installed, bead blasted, and a little work done on the action for $550 than pay the $850 for the WC version.
If/when I'm back in the market for a gp100, I would pay more for a used WC for those sights, but at almost double over the cost of a used gp100 standard, a new WC gp100 just isn't really singing to me.
I sure would love the chance to shoot one though. If I don't like a revolver, my mind tends to change after a few cylinders through it.
The blued version looks really good too. Guess I'm still on the fence hoping for a stiff breeze to push me into one, lol
