WildWildWest and the 'automatic' derringer.

couldn't really think of a better way to topic this...does anyone remember 'The Wild Wild West'? Not the movie-the series. Or perhaps 'Taxi Driver'? In both shows they used a derringer that fit up the sleeve and they 'rocked' their arm and it popped out.

Anyone got instructs or an idea how this might work? Seems like it might make a nice CCW backup for closen-personal surprize situations.

Hahahaha, Wild Wild West, that was a great show! The movie was almost laughable, but the show was great. Yeah, I know what you are talking about, I have seen it in a few other places, and that would be cool when you are wearing a suit.
 
Dang Santana. I can't believe you said that out loud. ;) But since you did I will admit I to have put some thought into building such a device. Actaully it would be a simple thing to build. I've ven figured out a release mechanism to "spring" it into action. An offset "ramp" to bring it into the palm when released but keep it tucked close the the wrist when closed. But when I think about it as the gun slides down the arm the hammer would be prone to snagging.......and cocking. The trigger would be prone to snagging.......and pulling.

I have also tried to figure out how to rig a derringer like the one Paladin carried behind his gunblet in Have gun, will travel.
I think I've about got that one ready to build. :D

Gentilemen! has anyone here seen "The Adventures of Ford Fairlane"? The little gun up the sleeve idea really doesn't work.
 
It always worked for James West!

My favorite Derringer was the "take down" Derringer he kept in the heels of his boots. I always wondered if he bought those boots at a gunstore. ;) :D

It was also in the Adventures of Sherif Lobo. some bad guy came into town and tried to out draw him with it.
I have wanted one forever, but I don't wear anything with sleves big enough. I thought someone must have made it for real, or is it just a movie one off prop?
 
Tales of the Gun on the History Channel had an episode on unusual Conealable disguised guns, and turn of the century guns and they showed a gun that was attached to a leather cuff worn under a shirt and coat, and the trigger was actuated by a pull string that hung down inside the gentlemans suit coat. This required that you cock your hand in such a way as to NOT blow it off when the gun fired, and use the other hand to pull the cord.

They also showed pen guns umbrella guns a silenced ruger inside a briefcase, etc
 
Aliens 4... The Rasta fellow had to VP70s pop outta his sleaves... very cool. I especially liked the bounce off the ceiling headshot he made. Deadly Stuff!
 
Louis L'amour in several of his stories mentions has several caracters carry a derringer up their sleeve. I think the way this is done for a right handed person is to put the gun up the left sleeve using an elastic band to hold it to the wrist. The derringer may then be drawn with the right hand. Bringing ones hands together is not a motion which advertises that one is reaching for a gun. This enables a fast unexpected draw.

It is really a very simple trick and as such not dramatic enough for a movie, hence all the complex gadgets on which only an actor can afford to "risk his life." In real life keep it simple, its more effective and safer.
 
Ingenious folks some of those designers.....I like the single shot pocket knives, the ones Ive seen were primarily switch blades. Time life put a book in one there series were it talked of unique weapons carried in ww2....fubsy.
