Wife's pic for handgun

You just never know! My wife standing 5'1 @ 125lbs decided she wanted a gun for defensive reason, so having 3 of my own a 38 spl, a Sig 9mm compact and a 1911 government I took her to the range to let her shoot all three to get a feel of all 3 different trigger types and a good variety of calibers I figured it would be between the 38 or 9mm, putting my bet she'd like the 9. My little wife is insisting she now wants a commander .45 1911, out of the 3 she liked the 1911 trigger the best, the grip the best and said the recoil wasn't that hard for her to handle, and get this she liked that it sounded like it meant business. So when you think the last pistol a petite woman will want let alone use is a .45 guess again and be weary of petite women and what there packing!!!! I love it gives me yet another excuse to buy another 1911! The moral of the story, take your wife shooting you just might get to buy another pistol!

I bought my wife an M&P compact 9mm and a G19 at different times. She still likes a government model with fullpower .45s the best. :)

I really think women in general like the feeling of power when it comes to firearms. My friend enjoys the Sig 220 best, the little J-frame least. Why?

"Because it's powerful and doesn't kick that bad."

A lot of people over estimate the recoil of a 1911 pistol. The .45acp is a potent round but hardly the hardest recoiling one. IMHO, a hot .38spl+p is worse if fired from a small revolver. The 1911 does a great job of absorbing the recoil the round does generate. Add that to the great ergonomics and the 1911 is still around after all these years for a very good reason. :)

How Did You Do It?

Sorry to Hijack the thread but, I'm still trying to get my lady friend to fire mine. I don't know if she's scared, or just really uninterested... Everytime i ask her to go shooting she simply says "No thanks babe, have fun and be safe"... I don't get it. I'm the most rediculous dude when it comes to gun safety, i won't even clean it with her in the house... i've taught her everything i know about safety, from "pretend it's always loaded" to "aproach the door at an angle" and she still just says "no" she won't say why, but she's adamant about not going. Her dad and brother shoot with each other regularly as do my best friend, my dad and I. Occasionally we ALL shoot together. Everyone she knows shoots and conceal carries but she won't shoot with us. I've forced her to hold it (unloaded of course) so i could show her the proper way to remove it from it's case/holster, secure and safety it, and properly hold it. I've showed her how to safely arm it incase someone breaks in when i'm gone, but i want her to get in some fire time... We've been together 5 years...so it's not a trust issue... so how do i warm her up to it?

Maybe you need to stop trying. Maybe she simply doesn't want to shoot, get it? A lot of people don't want to shoot, yet don't mind their SO doing it. Leave her alone and give her her space.

My wife wants to have a gun for defense, but hates shooting. I've taken her a few times, and she doesn't like the recoil on my 9mm Taurus. She says it hurts her hand and she gets shaky and has to put the gun down every few shots. She still says it's a good idea for her to have one and insists that she will "eventually", but her interest level is almost gone. I've been looking for a good .22lr so that recoil isn't as much of an issue. I think I found the perfect gun today in a Firestorm .22. If she won't carry 9mm for SD, I figure .22lr high velocity hollowpoints are better than nothing, and the Firestorm is built like a carry gun rather than a target plinker.

my wife doesn't either but a few years back she decided

she did need to take a handgun course since I have a few.... just so she would know how to handle them and what she had in case I've gone on...

I bought her all kinds of guns for the class none of which she liked... everything from a Walther PPK to Ruger Security Six in 357 mag... shooting standard 38's... finally she did like shooting a Ruger Single Six...

when she took the class they shot outdoors in the open no roof over their heads.. when we tried the handguns I'd bought for her it was under a roof.... she had no problem shooting a 1911 and really decided she liked my ruger P-95 best...

Why go all the way down to a .22? Get a Bersa Thunder .380 for her to try. The recoil is almost not there, and it's small enough to conceal easily. Damn fine little gun!

+1 there! My wife regularly shoots a Colt Defender and a Springfield V10, both with 230 gr. FMJ loads. She loves both and shoots them easily.

She absolutely HATES my Taurus 85 snubbie with ANY load. Won't even touch it.

OP:
Maybe she's just uninterested. There are some folks who don't like what we like. I dated a woman who lived to play cards, in which I had no interest at all. I have a 46 year old car; some folks think it's cool. However, some wonder why I don't drive something more up to date, something with airbags, power brakes and cruise control.

Actually, if I kept trying to lure my girlfriend into liking something that she did not, she'd definitely tell me to drop it. Your wife seems like a more patient sort.

Put my wife in the catagory of women that like the 1911 .45ACP and don't like J-frame size revolvers. She likes Glocks as well, at least the mid size and full size.

I guessed wrong for my wife too.

I guessed she'd like a smallish 38 Special.

To her, they don't have the right proportions. She likes at least a 4" barrel, and doesn't like the looks of revolvers or their recoil.

She chose a 9mm High Power.

What did I choose? A smallish 38 Special. :o

(357 actually, stoked with Specials)
