Wife's first trip to the range

SP101

New member
We spent 3 1/2 hours at the range this a.m. Wife shot several .22's, a couple older .38s, 9 mm, a Lady Smith and our SP101 with a local instructor. She said the Lady Smith and SP101 were her favorites. She really enjoyed it, but is tired this afternoon. She probably shot 150 rounds or so. It was her first handson firearms training. Towards the end she tailed off quite a bit, but her confidence really improved versus the starting point.

I shot LCP, LCR, a couple of .44's and a couple .40's. Most shooting today was with a Makarov .380. Accuracy with the Makarov was very, very good at 15 yards. It's kind of quirky, but I was real accurate with it. Also shot the heck out of my SP101. Great fun. Even shot one round of the instructors' .48 bear gun (not sure of brand). One was enough.

I'm glad my wife enjoyed it. She's already mentioned that we need to keep going back because she doesn't want to "lose" what she's gained. I'm glad to hear it, but I don't want to over do it either. She'll be sticking with .38's for the forseeable future. (I'm not sure .357s are in her future, but that's o.k.)

.48 bear gun

Guessing a Ruger in .480; probably Super Redhawk, or Super Redhawk Alaskan. I think these models have been discontinued, which is really too bad.

Nice to hear your wife enjoyed the range.

FWIW, my lady hadn't really liked the range on the couple times she went. Then I took her to shoot down where our back yard meets the woods. She liked that much better. Turns out the noise levels at the indoor range were giving her a headache; she preferred the relative quiet and lack of distraction in an isolated, outdoor setting.

Outdoor range

Super Redhawk must have been it.

We have an outdoor range (shooting club) within a few miles of home. The folks there are friendly and things are real spread out. There are a few indoor ranges around, but I prefer outdoors.

I have taken my wife to our local outdoor range a few times. I think she would go a lot more with me if we could find child care for our two small kids!

I took her about 2 weeks ago, it was her 3rd time ever to shoot a pistol, and she was knocking down the 6" steel plates from 15 yards away with a 2" model 60 .38 Spl! At one point she hit 5 out of 5. Then when we ran out of .38 ammo, I got out the .22 Ruger, and she hit 10 out of 10 from 15 yards!

Watch out, those women are more accurate than we may think. ;)

Pistol craft is definitely not a macho pursuit. Lots of women take to shooting quite naturally and shoot very well, including my youngest daughter (a 20-year old junior majoring in civil engineering), if you don't mind a bit of bragging from a proud daddy.

Women can really shoot !!!

I took my wife out with my handguns.
First I give her my Model 14-6" .38 loaded it with 5 rounds (empty chamber to start with). I set her up at 10 yards to "shoot at the target" and get used to it. She did well and asked for another set.
I gave her the full 6 and backed her up to 25 yds just to let her see the difference shooting at that distance. She shot all 6 rounds and set them all inside of a 6" circular target. She turned to me and said "So what's the difference between 10 and 25 yards supposed to be." All I could say to her is "I never want you mad at me if you have a gun in your hand - At any distance!" She got the point that she did real good. She thinks the Model 14 is her gun now.

So, every time I go to the range she's with me and often brings her best girlfriend too. She shoots everything we have from a .22 revolver to the .45 Long Colt Uberti revolver, except she won't shoot the .357 snub nose.
She doesn't like it when I shoot it, and wants nothing to do with it.

She is very proficient with the .38, and my XD-45. She likes shooting the 9mm but prefers the .45 for some odd reason. As long as she likes to go to the range all is good.
She's even considering having us get a reloading set so we can save a few bucks, and have better control over our ammo. Most of our friends have convinced her that we'll enjoy reloading our own ammo as a good hobby together.

10 yards

I'd like to shoot more at 10 yards, but at the outdoor range we go to 15 yards is the close limit.

Hi,
well done to all those who take their wives to a range!

Ladies certainly can shoot well, and outshoot many bigger/stronger men.

I introduced my wife to guns shortly after we met 15 years ago, and she took to sport shooting, (Speed plate, bowling-pins & IDPA) as if she was born for it.

Despite being a rather small lady,(or maybe because of it?) she focuses on
sticking to the correct principles and it shows.

Two weeks ago we had the pin-sooting national champs; She represented the province in which we live in the ladies-team, they took the national first place for ladies teams.

I say well done to her and to all the ladies (wherever they are) who decide to learn how to shoot, and to the men who are willing to help them.

Brgds,
Danny
