Wife's Carry Option

Hello all, here's the deal. My wife got her CPL the same time as I did but she doesn't usually carry. Originally I bought the XD for me and the PPS for her, but since she doesn't carry it I've pretty much adopted it (and love it).

She definitely isn't as into guns as I am, though I have rubbed off on her over the years. Very positive towards guns, etc. After talking to her about it recently she said she feels like our guns are all "my guns" and she doesn't like owb/iwb carry or purse carry.
She wants to try a thigh holster such as this one:

My thought was that the Walther PPS may be to big heavy for that (granted I have zero experience with that...) So while we were at Cabelas today we went to the fun section - sorry I mean gun section :D - and I had her hold several of the smaller guns like the lcp and other micro pistols, mostly 380s.

Well, long story short she liked the feel and look of the SIG 938. I was pleasantly surprised it was chambered in 9mm and I also liked the feel of the gun, especially since it was reminiscent of the 1911 I want to get.

So, I thought I'd check in with two questions:

1) To the ladies, is that carry method all that practical? My wife is very slender, 5'6, 130lbs, and typically wears shirts and dresses. She is a stay at home mom of our 2 year old and we're usually together when she's actually out and about.

I guess the gents can help out with this also if you know any ladies who carry this way... Lol

2) Is the SIG p938 a good way to go? I don't have much experience with SIGs but I know they're known for top quality and I'm pretty sure I would not be disappointed should I pick it up. But any other ideas out there we should consider? Hopefully our local ranges have all them in the rental inventory otherwise handling it at the counter and dry fire will be the closest we get to testing it.

I really appreciate your upcoming responses!

same problem here

I have same problem with my wife as far as the gun part! She doesnt like the 380 I have and wants here own personal one and she also fell in love with the Sig, she has her heart set on a 238 edge its a 380 and she has talked to other ladys who carry the 238 with a IWB wearing just a tanktop and t-shirt. I should be getting the 238 soon, so we will see how it goes. Ill have to follow this post to see how it goes for you.. Good luck

Consider how she plans to carry the pistol (loaded or empty chamber? cocked & locked?).
It would be good if you can get her to operate and shoot the pistols before buying.
If she is not into guns enough that operating a semi-auto is not comfortable to her, maybe consider a revolver.

The SiG 938 is brilliant to shoot - as are many others - but none of that matters if she doesn't like it. Take your wife to a range that rents guns and have her try a few out. Pick out what she likes, not what you think she might like. This is supposed to be her gun after all.

We currently have two revolvers. She loves them but aren't carry recover. She held the off but liked the SIG better. I told her I'd actually prefer to get the 1911 first so she can learn the platform on a full size pistol. Most likely she would keep it cocked and locked. 6+1 rounds of hollowpoint 9mm.

Kathy Jackson (Pax here) made a comment to the effect that thigh holsters only work for women who don't actually have thighs. My wife agreed wholeheartedly. Visit her website at www.corneredcat.com for an excellent educational site for shooters, oriented to women but useful for anyone.

For women who want to dress stylishly, the size and position of the carry pistol matter even more than it does for men. Your wife might be more amenable to carrying at her waist with a smaller pistol. My wife wanted something very small. We went to the LGS to look at an LCP and the fellow behind the counter showed her the Sig P238. My wife then sent me home for more money. Mama is happy.

The little Sig shoots very nicely - far and away the best of any of the pocket .380s I have tried. It conceals very easily on person or in a purse. It is a little heavier than some of the polymer pocket pistols, having an alloy frame, but that very likely contributes to its ease of shooting. I liked hers so much that I picked up one for myself for a "dress pistol" for occasions when IWB was not convenient.

The 938 is slightly larger. I have not personally shot one, but I have been told that the recoil is more noticeable than the .380 version, but not objectionable for most people.

The better half, a.k.a. "boss lady" is really into the 1911 platform. Has pretty much absconded with my colt gold cup trophy match, and finally bought a concealed carry purse for her new government model. She learned that all the sharp edges on that trophy match hindered her draw, but still has yet to get the draw down as fast as she would like.

I told her that if she couldn't get it out of the purse fast enough to just whup the bad person up the side of their head with that purse...2 and a half pounds of steel and wood ought to get their attention, not to mention all the other stuff she carries-extra car bumpers, grand kids toys-you name it, its in there.

Got hateful looks for that quip.

My wife isn't into guns, but decided she wanted to carry something. She had a chance to try quite a few, but was only comfortable with a revolver. I ended up buying a Smith 638 which she carries in her purse.
