Wife thinks she wants a USP9 full size... hows $619?

Hello all...

For those who have been following my latest pistol purchase which is a full size 9mm for my wife, there is news on that front. She decided, after handling the Sig P239 and the HK USP9 that she likes the USP better. She likes the over size controls and the Sig is a little small for her hands (which are about 1/4 inch longer fingers than mine.)

My local range, where I bought my USP45f, has a USP9 fullsize blued that is coming in in a week. The owner said he would charge me $619. In addition he will throw in a 10 hr range card for free.

Now, I buy his range cards becasue the range is $10 an hour (Orange County, CA is expensive) and a 10 hour card is only $70. So to me the range card is worth something. Seventy bucks, to be exact!

This makes the pistol effectively $549 NIB. What do you guys think? Is that a good price? He is only getting one in 9mm for all that he has 4 USP45's and 3 USP40's.... I am sure he will order me what I want but I dont know how long that would take.

Thanks for all the input!

J.T.

PS: for what its worth *I* liked the Sig P229 the best... but she didnt like the controls :[

Considering the free range time, it sounds like an excellent deal. The cheapest I've seen new USP9's on the net is around 575-600 (I haven't made it to a gun show in a while).

The one caveat is to make sure it is the right variant. I have seen variant 7 guns (DAO) go for as little as 450 and 475.

Lastly, did she handle the USP 9 compact? I happen to like it better, but that's only my opinion.

If your wife has determined the USP to be the one she wants, then that's great. Just one suggestion...

Have you two seen the "new" SIGPro 2009s? I finally got to see/touch one at my local shop (after reading about them for a while). I did a side-by-side comparison with the 239, and there is a world of difference.

Let me just say that I think the 239 is my least favorite SIG (that I've seen and held). I've got a 225 and I've tried to get into the 239, but I always think, "this gun just feels weird -- too thin, round and strangely balanced."

The 2009 felt very nice. I think the slide release is closer to where it is on the USP. It is a bigger gun, which your wife might prefer. The biggest difference between the 2009 and the USP is the price. The 2009 is around the price of other low-end SIGs -- something about cheaper polymer and better machining.

Check it out if you can. BTW... my friend is checking out the USP-Compact in 9mm. Prices in Central Texas are in the $650-700 without any free range card. So your situation sounds pretty sweet.

Best price I've seen is $550 at a show. It sounds like a fair deal considering that you're also getting some range time. Make sure all the serial numbers match.

So many pistols, so little money.

I bought mine new at a gun show for $470 last year --- I wasn't even the market for one but bought it because I can't pass up a sale...

It turns out that the USPs are available in two different packages. The first is with the nice plastic case, manual, cleaning supplies. Police departments and the like buy them in a beige paper box with two mags, no instructions, and no cleaning brush. You might want to ask if you can buy it like that, you will save about $50.

Bought my USP9F for about $550. It came in the beige paper box, one mag + manual.
Where in OC do you live? I used to shoot at the firing line in HB. 1 year membership for ~$100, free rangetime all year...

Actually, the special USPs come in a beefy cardboard box with ONE magazine and they do come with an owners manual/instruction book.

Benchmark your H&K prices off of Cal's Sporting Armory ( www.calssportingarmory.com ), one of the best around.

They currently have the USP 9 and 40 (hardcase, two mag) for $575.

You have a good deal there. I paid $550 for my USP9FS with (1) 15 round magazine(3 months ago). Though used it was virtually unfired. It was made in '94, has a non-captured recoil spring and the conventionally rifled barrel. One recommendation I have is to buy the Hogue Hand-all rubber grips(for Glock pistols). It is a finger groove design that was very popular for non-FG Glocks. The palm swell and FGs of the Hogue greatly improve the pebbly polymer surface of the USP standard grips.

Mikie - Not everyone likes those Hogue grips. I HATE them! The harsh checkering on the USP makes it stick in my hand like glue, even in the pouring rain or when my hands are really sweaty. I trust, but hope to never know, the effect would be the same with blood.

If you have smaller hands, the last thing you want is to make the chunky USP grips bigger.

Finally, I don't want anything rubbery to catch my concealment garment.

If it hurts your hands, try a little manual labor to toughen you up ;).

Seriously, do a bunch of shooting without the Houges and I think you'll get used to it, and maybe even like it better.

Morgan,

JT said his wife's hands are bigger than his so I don't think the Hogues would be a problem. Also IMHO the difference between the pebbly/rough surface of the stock USP grips and the rubber Hogues catching your clothing is minimal.

Each to his own.
