MOUNTAIN HOME -- A 43-year-old woman likely acted in self-defense when she shot her husband dead Wednesday night, Baxter County Sheriff Joe Edmonds said Thursday.
Bobbie E. Elder called authorities at 10:01 p.m. Wednesday to report the shooting at her residence a few miles north of Mountain Home, Edmonds said. Deputies found her husband, Leonard Eric Elder, 33, lying on the living room floor with a gunshot wound in his the chest.
Bobbie Elder had cuts and bruises and "a knot on her head the size of baseball," Edmonds said. "She told officers there at the scene [that] this had been going on for some time, and she had taken all that she could stand."
Leonard Elder was shot once with a .38-caliber pistol. He was pronounced dead at Baxter County Regional Hospital. Bobbie Elder was treated and released at the hospital, the sheriff said.
Leonard Elder had a history of beating and threatening his wife, Edmonds said. He had threatened to kill her and her family, and Bobbie Elder had sought protective orders against him in 1998 and 1999, the sheriff said. He also had beaten and threatened his previous wife, Edmonds said. "Right now, we're leaning toward more of a self-defense, domestic violence situation, especially with his past threats," he said.
Leonard Elder also had a criminal history along with the domestic violence, including convictions for assault and theft, Edmonds said.
The sheriff said he was discussing the case with prosecutor Gordon Webb, who will decide whether Bobbie Elder will be charged. As of Thursday, no charges had been filed.
