Wife+Gun+Carry=Confusion

Cobra 4-6

Finally convinced my wife to get her CCW. I went out and got her a Taurus UL85, .38 snubbie. It's a great little gun and she shoots it well.

However...the only way she'll carry is by placing it in her usual pocketbook; no holster, fanny pack, special pocketbook design, etc. I won't let her carry an unprotected revolver loose in a pocketbook. I can just see her getting an eyebrow pencil caught in the trigger guard!

Do I...a) get her a gun with an external safety (Walther?) or b) forget the whole idea and leave her piece in her car?

You can get a cheap holster and sew it into the purse. Uncle Mike's makes some 'universal' type holsters that would really help you out. The other option is to buy a purpose-made purse or fanny pack.

Looks like a need for some serious education re handling of firearms, security of purse etc. I would hope you have a friend, preferably female that can help out. Workin with relatives gets a little hairy at times.

Sam...Bravest man I know taught his wife to fly.

I would advise a smaller gun on her person rather than anything in her purse. I just don't think she is likely to be able to get the gun out when she needs to. Especially if it is in the car. So my $.02 is to get her a Kel-Tec P-32 or the like. Why not get her a car gun too? A 6 shot with a 4" barrel.

Hate to say it, if she is that...erm...careless about carrying, she probably ought not be carrying. Thats not to say that more education/training might not mold her into a responsible CCW, just that she's not at that point right now.

Thanks, Guys -

I'm pretty much in your corner on this one. She has a close friend who's been carrying for years. Guess I'll have her break the news. Damn, 'Nam was easier than this!

If her purse has inside pockets you can get a belt clip holster and clip it into the pocket. Remember your audience, and point out that (A) the holster will keep the gun from sagging the bottom of her purse out of shape, (B) it will be easier to find stuff without that big piece of metal rolling around loose, (C) the gun could scratch up her compact, leather checkbook or whatever, and (D) a holster will make changing purses easier.

If she balks, a week or two of carrying loose in her purse will probably change her mind, especially if you're sly enough to sneak in and tangle her keys in the trigger guard (BEHIND the trigger please) or get her eyebrow pencil stuck in the barrel.

When you've been married 26 years, as I have, you develop spousal tactical awareness. :)

How about a pocket holster? Any type of holster to 1) protect the trigger and 2) place the pistol in at a good angle for drawing it.

And I would agree with furthering her education. Remind her that when she needs the gun, it isn't time to be fumbling around inside her purse.

Wish I could get my wife to carry.

Hey guys...

My wife was a "car carrier" when I met her. I finally convinced her that a Taurus PT100 under the seat was NOT just as good as a Kahr MK9 in the purse. Now I know that in the purse is not the best, but it's better than the car. She was quick to agree to carrying the Kahr in an Uncle Mike's IWB holster. She even let me look around for a purse with a concealed gun compartment. TOO EXPENSIVE! Until I found these guys... http://www.gungear.com/
They have incredible prices on their purses, and their products are TOP NOTCH!
Now I know you said she won't go for a new purse, but if there was one that looked like hers...???
Anyway, I'd at least try to insist that she should put the gun in a cheap IWB holster. Try the "it'll scratch your gun" or "your lotion could leak and the gun might malfunction" excuse. (The lotion thing actually happened to the spare mag my wife carries, but no mishap from the incident)Another option, the shock approach. Take her revolver to the range, take a tube of lipstick from the purse, and fire the gun with the tube of lipstick?? I may just be a jerk, but I find the shock method to work in lots of situations, (and it's fun too) like teaching someone who knows it all that they may NOT be able to operate a semi-automatic pistol in an emergency if they don't practice practice practice. ;)

Hope this helps!

Is it hopeless to consider buying her a gun-purse, in the same color as what she now carries? For you, brownie points for the gift; for her, a NEW purse.

My wife prefers the type of purse with compartments either side of the pistol pouch; velcro closure at one end of the pouch. She doesn't plan on drawing and presenting; just to turn her body toward the assailant as she grabs the pistol, and Bang!

Try getting your wife to look at a handgun pocketbook from Coronado Leather Company. These speciality pocketbooks have a hidden slot for the gun and nothing else goes in there to get in the way. My wife has been carrying a G19 for 5 years in this manner. The leather is outstanding and the purse is very well made.Good luck, ShooterJD
