Wife Chooses the Glock 42

Went gun shopping yesterday and while I thought we might end up with a J frame revolver but she didn't like it after trying it on the range. I think the size of the cartridge was intimidating. She tried the Glock 42 and although she had some problem racking a new one, she liked it a lot. Now to break it in. It's great to be able to shop at a store that has a try before you buy policy. Shooters Express in Belmont, NC.

The J-frames, particularly the light ones, can be difficult to shoot well. My wife picked a Sig P238. The small .380s as a group seem to be popular choices with ladies, I think because they are easy to dress around and small enough to go in a purse when the clothes and/or event don't allow body carry, and they mostly still shoot pretty well.

(Yes, I know off-body carry is less than ideal, but a lot of women choose to do so, at least part of the time.)

I would up with a P238 of my own. Start saving for your new Glock.;)

She missed the target completely with the J frame, and that hurt. When she tried the 42 she was fine so it sold itself, that and the light weight. I have two Sigs and really like all metal but who knows.

I would take a Glock 42 over a J-frame myself, good choice.
Also, she is much more likely to shoot (practice with) something she likes.

A J frame in 38 special is a poor choice for most beginners (327 or 32 H&R magnum is a different story).

I have heard lots of good things about the Glock 42.

I have a G 42 that is an easy pistol to carry and shoot, it is always a decision maker to determine whether to carry the G 42 or Sig P 238 which just happens to be another fine little easy shooting pistol. I use a kydex IWB holster for either pistol and it is so comfortable i rarely am conscious i am carrying.

My smaller framed wife tried all my smaller handguns a few weeks ago to see if one suited her. She had already tried out my larger handguns; she shot them well enough but the grips were a little too large & they were too large for her to carry.

Among the LCR, P3AT, S&W Shield, Imez 70A (.380), & Walther PPK/S, the PPK/S was the best fit but still wasn't ideal. I've sold some guns to buy a Glock 42, Kel Tec P32, & SIG P238 for her to try out at the next range trip. Her hand strength limits her ability to rack the slides (it also eliminates the usefulness of any DAO revolver), but one or two of these should please her. The P238 is a sweet little pistol, & - with the hammer cocked and the safety on - racking the slide takes very little effort. I'll wager the P238 will be her favorite with the Glock 42 a close second.

For what it's worth my wife was worried about racking the slide but the rental was quite easy for her and the one she got just needs to be broken in. Working on that now. She likes no hammer as she doesn't want to have to pull the hammer back before firing which I believe the P238 has.

You carry the p238 just like a 1911, cocked and locked. Perfectly safe. Actually saf"er" than the Glock. No need to thumb the hammer, just the safety.

I'm with Snuffy being a big fan of the 238, but it takes many people some experience before they are comfortable with "cocked and locked" and the Glock 42 does have a sizable ballistic advantage over the 238 with its roughly half inch longer barrel. Keep the trigger secure and the Glock is a dandy choice, i.e. don't just toss it in a purse alongside keys and pens and things. (Shouldn't do that with any pistol, but...)
