Wife and daughter passed CWP

Was a good - GREAT - Saturday! My wife and daughter went to the CWP class and both passed. Look out BG's, two more ready for ya!

Only one thing, though. Had only two revolvers, a 6" 357 and a snub 38. Neither of the girls could rack the slide on my 9 mm semi, so the daughter had to use the snubby. Advice - beg borrow or whatever anything else, a snubby is tough in 38 for two reasons. Lots of recoil for a lady and lousy from the standpoint of POA not equaling POI. For our CWP, the last ten shots are from 12 and 15 yards! And you are required to draw from the holster and shoot within a time limit. Us "tough" TFL'ers can do that with no problem. But its another matter for slim women. Yes they can do it, but it's no piece of cake. The range qualification part took over 45 minutes and I thought both of the girls would drop from trying to hold up those big pieces most of that time as the instructor went through the test procedure. The whole class took from 8 am to 7 pm for six people. The other four were men. The daughter will now be more than happy to become "good" with a P-32.

All told, though, they are both proud and glad they went - and PASSED! ! ! And I'm proud, too !

Glad to hear they passed. I get bummed every time someone else gets one and I can't :( I live in RI where the attorney general does not believe in carrying except he carry's go figure.. Oh well.

Congratulations to you all!!

Now it's time to teach them how to operate a pistol. For some reason, racking a slide apparently isn't "natural" for a female and has to be learned. Kind of like a stick shift and a clutch. Truth is a lot of men have problems too. My wife favors a revolver. My daughter likes a semi-auto. Of course she is more like her daddy than her mother is. I think it is a good idea to be able to use as many firearms as possible.

You have to be there when it's all over. Otherwise you can't say "I told you so."

Better days to be,

Ed

Big congrats for the whole family.

On the gun note, is there a law mandating a certain size or minimum caliber? When I went, I took my Mountain Eagle .22 as there was no mention of needing a particular weapon.

I ended up lending it to the only woman there and used the instructor's Glock 22 in .40. We both scored perfect though I was very dubious about the glock.

Congrats to your lady folk, Cajun! Since they need to pick out their own guns now, you get the chore of dragging them around the gun shops and shows. :)

Must have been Ladies' Day Saturday, my wife took the Florida CCW course at the Sheriff's Dept and wowed the instructor with her general knowledge AND with a 10 round group (at 21 feet) you could cover with one hand. Now she's complaining the Ruger P95 is too big for her hand, so we went to the Gun Show after the course and she's narrowed her own choices down to a Kahr P9, Steyr M series, Taurus Millenium, or a Mini Glock with Pearce grip extension. I love a woman with good taste.

My wife and daughter also have CCW's (Virginia). We have frequent target practice sessions to keep skills fresh (My skills too). Virginia does not require live fire for certification or recertification.

Good for all of you--and your points are well made. Some time ago during a NRA Personal Protection course we (instructors) were a little chagrined to find out--two days on-- that a lady could not operate the trigger of a Ruger DA revolver in DA. Now we check the strength question very early on. I have run into the slide manipulation situation with quite a few women, but the DA revolver caught us by surprise. Luckily she was able to come up with an identical gun with a DA pull she could manage.

The best initial approach for ladies is probably a K frame in 3-4", or a J frame 3" with grips that fit.

Ideally new CCW shooters will not buy a gun until they have some exposure and honest advice on the subject. I am also against initial use of a semiauto unless there is a lot of motivation and one-on-one training. Sometimes it works out, and other times you wish they had just bought a Model 10 S&W.

Just got a call this evening from a lady who bought a S&W 9mm of some kind and wants training. This keeps up I'm going to start charging...
