CARACAS, Venezuela (AP)
The U.S. government is spending millions of dollars in the name of democracy in Venezuela bankrolling human rights seminars, training emerging leaders, advising political parties and giving to charities. But the money is raising deep suspicions among supporters of President Hugo Chavez, in part because the U.S. has refused to name many of the groups it's supporting. Details of the spending emerge in 1,600 pages of grant contracts obtained by The Associated Press through a Freedom of Information Act request. The U.S. Agency for International Development released copies of 132 contracts in all, but whited out the names and other identifying details of nearly half the grantees.

Wonder what the reaction would be if Chavez started doing the exact same thing here?

Why do you automatically assume that he isn't? Maybe Venezuela doesn't have the freedom of information act.

We are quite publically trying to use the political process of his country to oust him at the next election. To date, he has not publically done the same thing here.

Tin pot dictator who just happens to be our 4th largest oil importer...

And way to quote articles from pat robinson and his 700 club Celtic...Just by putting that at the top of your list of applicable articles you nearly lost me.

I would love having some assault & battery on my record for the chance to kick pat robertson in the nads...Very mature of me, I know, but still. Best...probation...ever!

Martigan, I've never heard of this character of which you speak, but after a brief google session these are some quotes of his that i've found.

On Terror: "How can we escape from the trap that the terrorists have set us?" he asked. "Only by recognizing that the war on terrorism cannot be won by waging war. We must, of course, protect our security; but we must also correct the grievances on which terrorism feeds.... Crime requires police work, not military action."

On the Bush Administration: "An open society is a society which allows its members the greatest possible degree of freedom in pursuing their interests compatible with the interests of others," Soros said. "The Bush administration merely has a narrower definition of self-interest. It does not include the interests of others."

On the Bush Administration: "The supremacist ideology of the Bush Administration stands in opposition to the principles of an open society, which recognize that people have different views and that nobody is in possession of the ultimate truth. The supremacist ideology postulates that just because we are stronger than others, we know better and have right on our side. The very first sentence of the September 2002 National Security Strategy[11] (the President's annual laying out to Congress of the country's security objectives) reads, 'The great struggles of the twentieth century between liberty and totalitarianism ended with a decisive victory for the forces of freedom and a single sustainable model for national success: freedom, democracy, and free enterprise.'"

On drug legalization: "I'll tell you what I'd do if it were up to me. I would establish a strictly controlled distribution network through which I would make most drugs, excluding the most dangerous ones like crack, legally available. Initially I would keep the prices low enough to destroy the drug trade. Once that objective was attained I would keep raising the prices, very much like the excise duty on cigarettes, but I would make an exception for registered addicts in order to discourage crime. I would use a portion of the income for prevention and treatment. And I would foster social opprobrium of drug use."

So other than allegedly playing internations stock markets and making billions, what did he do with regard to our elections again?

PS: new word of the day: Opprobrium: the disgrace or the reproach incurred by conduct considered outrageously shameful; infamy.

Soros is a major player in the gun control movement - amongst many other socialist causes. Instead of looking up what words come out of his mouth - look where he donates/spends his money. He spends millions every year to create and fund political and interest group front organizations. But of course he only supports "reasonable gun control," he's said so, so it must be true.

Nevermind, I forgot he was a citizen.:p

I still can't believe you paid attention to the 2004 election and have never heard of the guy.
