Why should I not buy an FNS 40?

I have a few bucks set aside for holsters, etc and then I get this bug to buy an FNS 40 for $360.

I have 0 gun need right now. I have a full arrangement of CCW and HD guns. I have range guns...frankly, I'm about to give up on 40, although I think if there was a best round, that the 40 might be that....but my current 40 just doesn't really respond to reloading...a Kahr P40.

So, in essence, my only purpose would be to have a 40 that I can have fun with and make a few loads for...

....or, I could let this urge pass, sell my P40 and my 40 reloading stuff and keep heading towards an all 1911 45 and 9mm other pistol strategy....

Let's walk you through this, amigo. I must say from the get-go that I like the .40 and have a lot of guns in that caliber, including a Kahr P40.

Having said that, since you're not heavily invested in that caliber, and apparently are not that interested in it, if I were you I would ditch the Kahr and not look back.

That's the thing. I had a Taurus PT101, but I let it slip through my hands as I was never a huge fan of that gun. Then I had a XD40, but I let that get away getting my Dan Wesson CCO.

Now, I'm kind of thinking it would be good to have one back....I mean, 40 ammo is the last to go in a run on ammo. In small guns, it carries as well as 9mm, but with bigger bullets.

I should probably just be happy with my 1911's and get back to making ammo and doing chores!

I get the "have one back". If you have a .40 itch, for whatever reason, that needs to be scratched, ammo availability during a shortage, etc., get a Glock 23, 22, 34, or a Springfield XDm or M&P in .40 and get a 9mm conversion barrel. All bases covered.

There is NO reason to not buy a FNS 40.

For 360 bucks....Helck YES!

I have a FNS 40 and a FNX 40...both are exceptional. Probably 3,000 rounds through each and never a hiccup. Got two other FNH pistols (hammer fired FNXs) and they are also exceptional.

I have all the handguns I will ever need (8) and I would jump on that FNS 40 like June bugs on a sweet tater vine.

I also have a 357 Sig barrel that I use in both the FNX 40 and the FNS 40.

If you want it and you can responsibly afford it, you buy it.

However, if you are looking for a reason not to get the FNS 40 I would say the reason is that they make the FNX 40, but that's just a personal preference. Both are great guns.

Buy it. You will never find that deal on a new handgun of such quality again. You can always unload it and make money or come out even. The .40S&W is an excellent round. I love it

well my only real gripe with the FNS is that they are (in my opinion) drastically overpriced considering the workmanship that goes into them. for $360, I really couldn't argue that point anymore as that is pretty much as cheap as you can go before you start dropping into the lesser quality brands. if you're currently set up for it, and you really want to try it out, I doubt you'd have any trouble selling it again for the same price, why not give it a shot (no pun intended).

I have only shot one FNS40. Didn't care for the trigger at all; it never seemed to break in the same place, twice in a row. Perhaps it was just a bad example.

Urrgh... Thinking hard about this!

For Hevens sake make your own decision! The FN is a quality arm but If the cash is not immediately available save up until it is....of course then you will be faced with other decisions like "is it still available ar the same price?", "Do I still want an FN?", "Do I want a .40 now?" Etc. life is full of decisions, some harder than others.

I recently picked up two FNS-40's (a 40 and a 40L) in trades. Got rid of a Glock 35 and an M&P Pro in .40, both with a lot of upgrades (received that way in earlier trades). Others could, but I couldn't, shoot either of those guns worth a hoot. (That surprised me, as a I have 9mm versions of the same guns with similar mods and liked them both.) I guess I just don't shoot most .40s that well...

I found the FNS-40s to be great shooting guns, the FNS-40 similar in size to the Glock 23 and the FNS-40L similar to the Glock 22, but with a better grip, at least for me. (I haven't tried a Gen 4 Glock, yet...) They're nicely finished guns. When I got them, they were still selling new for $500-$600, and FNH is now selling them for much less. A bargain.

The only negatives is that there are currently few after-market parts or trigger upgrades available, but they are apparently coming out soon. Holsters can be found pretty easily. My 40L had custom trigger work before I traded for it, and it's pretty good; the smaller FNS-40 has a less good stock trigger, but it's still better than a stock Glock trigger (but stock Glock triggers aren't, to my thinking, a problem.) I find the FNS-40 "feel", in hand, almost as good as a CZ or Sphinx.

I have also picked up a EFK Firedragon 40>9 conversion barrel for the FNS-40, and it shoots well. It'll handle hardball ammo using the .40 mag, but not hollowpoint -- the .40 follower sets a bit lower, and the ragged nose of hollow point digs into the base of the feed ramp. I've since picked up a 9mm magazine, too. No other changes were needed.

I think FNH is putting on a big push to make their guns better known and to get them into US shooter hands. (Saw some full-page ads in several magazines, lately.)

If you can get one for around $400, it's a higher quality gun than other guns selling for that price.

I'm sure not the one to ask because.............

..........mine will arrive at my FFL dealer tomorrow afternoon from Palmetto State Armory. $376 including shipping for an FN FNS 40 S&W with night sights??!! Are you kidding me?

Buy it and put it in the bottom of your gun safe without shooting it and wait until Witch Hillary is elected president. I'll almost guaranty you that this gun at this price will outperform the DOW, gold or pigs feet futures!

It should also be noted that FN will sell you complete uppers for it.

So buy the 40 and if you don't really like the caliber buy a 9mm upper and turn it into a 9mm, then sell the 40 upper, or just save it in case 9mm becomes rare again...

I love my 9mm version, and really want to pick up the compact in 9mm as well.

I picked up a 40>9 conversion barrel from EFK Firedragon for my FNS-40, and it shoots well and is, I suspect, a good bit less expensive than a full 9mm upper. (About $156, for the EFK FD barrel, if I remember correctly.) I later picked up a 9mm mag, too. (I also have an FNS-40L that I really like -- it had a trigger job before I got it.)

Hardball ammo will run fine in the .40 mags. (At least one brand of hollow point doesn't like the .40 mag, as the ragged hollow point catches on the feed ramp sometimes, while the longer tip of hardball just slides on up the ramp.)
