Why should I change the stock on my AK 47?

I recently got a Norinco mak 90 sporter with the thumb hole stock. I've been to range with it and it seems to shoot just fine. I love the barrel and the trigger action. If I did change the stock I would need to replace a bunch of parts that seems to be working just fine to be in 922r compliance.

Is there a reason besides cosmetics to change the furniture?

because everyone nowadays has to have either an AK47 or an AR15 any anyone that does not conform then they must be messed up in the head. :D

nothing wrong with leaving it the way you like it.
I'm a kook though. I have wood furniture on my AR and plastic on the AK... I like them that way, that's all that matters

I think the thumbhole stocks on the AK are more comfortable than the horribly ergonomically challenged standard stocks. Keep it.

man i love wood stocked ARs. im not much of an AR person, so when the day comes to get one im going to get wood furniture. Its SUCH a good look. I like the wood calicos as well. Even non-AR people have to have one, its like a 1911, same story. Im not really into them but when i get one its gonna be wierd since im not really into them.

But to the OP, if it shoots well, i wouldnt do it. maybe save up and buy a second one, maybe a 74 or something to make it worth having two.

There is the issue of the warsaw length stock versus the nato length stock. If your thumbhole stock fits you, why change it? They are a little bit ugly but that is another matter.

clunky

The monster thumb hole stocks seem to be pretty clunky, I could not reach easliy the trigger on the one that came my way, plus, its big and makes a compact tidy package pretty bulky.

The thumbhole AK's are a monument to the anti-gun, paper pushing crowd.

I'd change it, legally, for no other reason.

bamaranger - Functionally all of the Norinco "aks" were alike.

If the thumbhole stock fits you that's fine.

Many people however remember that BEFORE the U.S. Govt. interfered
we could buy a NIB Norinco rifle for LESS MONEY than a used one goes
for Today.

AND - it looked like this.............

One caveat, before you buy some new furniture for your Mak, remove the stock to see if you have a slant or straight cut receiver. If you have a straight cut you are G2G with a simple replacement. If it is slant cut there will be a small unsightly gap. I have a slant cut receiver and it still sports its thumbhole stock even after 20+ years in my possession.
