If you didn't see my post Rights vs. Public Interest, I ask you to read it.
Our social system, and the basic principles of both the "liberal" Democrats and "compassionate conservative" Republicans are altruism.
The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines altruism as; 1 : unselfish regard for or devotion to the welfare of others; 2 : behavior by an animal that is not beneficial to or may be harmful to itself but that benefits others of its species.
What does this mean? That both parties favor welfare states. Whether it is welfare for people, or corporate welfare, or political welfare, their only argument is to what degree of welfare do we need?
Of course, how do they fund this welfare? By sacrificing your individual rights by coercing citizens to hand over their income for the common good (communism), for the benefit of the state (statism), or for our society (socialism).
By doing things in the "public interest" or "national interest" or for "the benefit of our citizens," it still means that even if it doesn't help you, you must sacrifice your individual rights for the "public interest."
Paraphrasing Ayn Rand from her book "Capitalism: The Unknown Idea" (pg. 126): Being that there is no such thing as "public interest," that collectivist catch-phrase is a blank check for totalitarian power.
Whether registering or confiscating firearms, forcing you to fund a bankrupt retirement scheme, taxing your income until you will have to depend on the state, or any other "public interest" scheme, you pay the price by giving up more of your rights.
So no matter if you vote for Republicans or Democrats, you are still voting for people who will sacrifice your rights for the "public interest."
There will always be pressure to help this group or that group and George "Dubya" Bush and Al Gore will tell you how they will help this group and that group, but what they don't tell you is that it is YOU and YOUR RIGHTS that they sacrifice.
Of course, some people enjoyed living in Nazi Germany and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, but millions had to die as sacrifices "to benefit society."
One day, some years after our beloved Republicans agreed to the "splendid" Democrats Firearms Confiscation Act, they'll argue which Presidential candidate knows best which new words should be added to the American Newspeak Dictonary.
