Why pistol grips?

Other than ruining the looks of a shotgun do pistol grips accomplish anything?

Is there an advantage to them?
 
Some situations warrant, some specify (policy) like for use in armored car (notice the ports).
shorter overall length, concealable (again certain applications)
Don't like them either, just have some folks policy requires/so we teach.
 
As mentioned above, it is more portable in close quarters like driver's compartments on armored trucks and can get out the gunports without hitting the steering wheel or other components. In the cargo area, portability is not a problem.;)

I have 3 gun match 870 and 1100 set up with choate pistol grip shoulder stocks so they handle like AR15 or FNFAL OR HK91, I dont "like them" though.
 
I'm asking about pistol grip stock as seen in "Let's see those SG's", not pistol grip only.

I can think of no advantages to a stock with a pistol grip.

I can see one small advantage to pistol grip only, that of shorter overall length.
 
Notbubba,until we develop a hinge in our forearms, the much vaunted shorter length of a PG only shotgun matters little.

I've a standing challenge to a shootout with the PG only folks, after a year there's been no takers.Shoulder fired shotguns are deadly, the PG jobs much less so.

As for full stocks w/ PGs, I've seen no advantage nor disadvantage to them. The standard stock works for me quite well.
 
For me, it's much easier to hold the shotgun on target with the right hand only while I reload with the left with the pistol-gripped full stock. Between that and being similar in feel to the FAL I usually shoot a pistol grip (only with full stock) is for me.
 
I bought my M1 Super 90 Tactical in the pre-ban days. It has an 18 1/2" barrel with ghost ring sights and a pistol grip as well as the shoulder stock and holds total of 8 rounds.

Whether it was the "COOL" look that prompted me to go that route or not, have never had the slightest trouble adjusting to the grip that I feel comfortable with. I do feel I can pull it into me tighter with the pistol grip than without, but that's just my opinion.

As I also have a pre-ban Colt Sporter Match HBAR that obviously has a pistol grip, maybe that's why the M1 Super 90 seems natural to me.

Pistol grip shotguns?..No thanks. The things just hurt to shoot.

As for full stocks with a pistol grip? No thanks to those either. If anything they increase the felt recoil for me due my tendency to push a bit forward in hoping to soak up the recoil with the pistol grip. I end up worse off.

I'll stick to standard stocks.

Been there done that.

Went back to the stock that came with the sg. Much easier to control and aim.

Also, I didn't want to have to register it as a handgun.

Have to admit they do look cool.
